About Tarkash: Nurturing the Next Generation
At Birju Maharaj Parampara, we believe the true test of a Kathak artist happens on the manch (stage) before an audience, not just in the studio. Tarkash is our platform where students aged 13-18 present their first full solo performance accompanied by live classical musicians. This is where they learn the weight of the silence between bols (beats) and the artistic responsibility of holding a stage alone.
The Philosophy of Tarkash
Tarkash, meaning a quiver of arrows, serves a specific purpose in our teaching methodology. It represents the moment a student is no longer just a learner but a vessel for the tradition. By 13, a student’s technical riyaaz in our Noida studio is substantial, but solo performance requires a shift in mindset. They are not hiding behind a group; they are commanding the space.
Why Live Music Matters
Authentic Lucknow Gharana Kathak is incomplete without the dialogue between the dancer and the musician. In every Tarkash production, we ensure our students perform with live Tabla and Sarangi players. This teaches them to handle improvisation, listen to the nuances of the Taal, and respond in real-time. A recording cannot provide the pressure or the grace of this live interaction.
What Students Achieve
Through this process, we focus on:
- Abhinaya (Expression): Deepening the emotional connection to Thumri and Ghazal.
- Nritta (Pure Dance): Perfecting Chakkars and footwork with precision.
- Stage Presence: Building the mental stamina to perform for 15-20 minutes uninterrupted.
If you are looking for shortcuts or a casual hobby, our intensive approach may not align with your goals. However, for those seeking a deep, lifelong connection to Indian classical dance, we offer a rigorous path that transforms technique into art.
Birju Maharaj Parampara
We are Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj and Smt. Ruby Mishra, and we carry the Kalka-Bindadin lineage. For us, teaching is not about syllabus completion but about molding a dancer’s soul until they are ready to stand alone on stage.
