Master Kalaripayattu Fundamentals: Maichuvad & Conditioning
Real Kalaripayattu isn't about fancy moves. It starts here with Maichuvad and conditioning, building the warrior's foundation from the ground up.
Correct form is everything. Here, I am observing a student executing a lunge, a key movement for developing flexibility and power. We provide constant, hands-on guidance to ensure every posture is performed safely and effectively for maximum benefit.

About The Foundation: Maichuvad & Body Conditioning
We don't do 'easy' here. This is an industrial-style gym in Horamavu, 4th floor, where you will spend 90 minutes drilling Maichuvad stances—horse, elephant, lion—until your legs burn. This is the bedrock of Kalaripayattu. If you cannot hold these stances, you cannot hold a weapon. We focus on conditioning because if your body isn't ready, your technique will fail when it matters.
The Reality of Our Training
Kalaripayattu is a commitment, not a weekend hobby. We operate an industrial garage-style gym in Horamavu, which means you get natural airflow, high ceilings, and a no-frills environment designed for serious work. We do not use mud floors. Instead, we use EVA puzzle mats to ensure your joints survive the long-term impact of deep squats and lunges.
Why Maichuvad Matters
Maichuvad is the 'ABC' of this art. If you skip this, you are building on sand. We drill these stances repeatedly to develop:
- Balance: Controlling your center of gravity during transition.
- Flexibility: Opening up your hips and hamstrings for fluid movement.
- Leg Strength: Developing the raw power needed for explosive combat.
What to Expect
We run Sunday batches to keep focus high and group sizes manageable. Each 90-minute session is a mix of Maichuvad and high-intensity conditioning. You will sweat, you will ache, and you might feel like quitting. That is the point. When you finally move to weapon training like Silambam, you will thank yourself for the months spent mastering these basics.
Note: We suggest bringing your own towel and water. The uniform (Kachakettu) is optional initially, but we will guide you on sourcing it once you are consistent.
