Understanding Perinatal Mental Health
Pregnancy and new parenthood bring big emotions. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space to talk through anxiety, baby blues, and postpartum challenges in your preferred language.
Postpartum Depression, or PPD, can manifest in many ways. Common symptoms include feelings of hopelessness, a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, and overwhelming fatigue. Knowing these signs is the first step to seeking help.
PPD symptoms can also include changes in your appetite or sleep, increased anxiety or irritability, and even thoughts of harming yourself or the baby. If this feels familiar, please know that confidential help is available.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after childbirth is a real and serious condition that is often not spoken about. Many women fear judgment, but speaking about a traumatic birth experience is crucial for healing. We provide a safe space to talk.
Obstetric violence is a form of gender-based violence that can cause lasting trauma. We stand against any form of disrespect or harm during childbirth and advocate for every person's right to a safe and dignified experience.
On Suicide Prevention Day, we highlight the critical link between mental health and maternal well-being. Improving access to quality prenatal and postnatal care, including mental health support, is essential for preventing tragic outcomes.
For World Mental Health Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting mothers. The emotional journey of pregnancy and childbirth is significant, and your mental health is a priority. You are never alone in this.
About Understanding Perinatal Mental Health
We offer more than just information. Our sessions provide a dedicated, private space for you to discuss anxiety, feelings of isolation, or the exhaustion of the early parenting days. Whether you prefer to speak in English, Kannada, Hindi, or another local language, we are here to listen without judgment or a list of expectations.
The journey into parenthood is often described as joyous, but it is also a period of intense emotional and physical change. Many parents find themselves struggling with feelings of hopelessness, irritability, or difficulty bonding with their baby, yet they stay silent due to the pressure of 'log kya kahenge' or the fear of being misunderstood.
Perinatal mental health conditions, including postpartum depression (PPD) and birth-related PTSD, are real and common. They are not a sign of personal failure. Our approach is grounded in active listening rather than prescriptive advice. We provide a peer-led supportive environment where you can express yourself freely.
Our services range from a free peer helpline for remote support to structured, 60-minute counseling sessions for deeper needs. We also maintain a physical center in Shanti Nagar for those who prefer face-to-face connection.
We focus on mental health triage, helping you distinguish between normal 'baby blues' and symptoms that may require professional intervention. If your situation requires clinical support, such as medication or psychiatric care, we provide a vetted list of specialists to guide you to the right help.
We recognize that language is a barrier in traditional healthcare. Our team offers support in English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam to ensure you can communicate in the language you feel most comfortable in. This is not about medicalizing your experience. It is about creating a space where you are heard, understood, and supported as you navigate this transition.
