About this collection
The highlight of our festival is the 'Always YES' dancers. If you are coming solo or feel shy about asking for a dance, just look for anyone wearing a rose on the dance floor. These are experienced dancers who are there to make sure everyone—regardless of experience level—gets a chance to dance. You do not need a partner or a dance background to belong here; you only need to show up.
The India Tango Festival is not a performance—it is a community gathering. Over the course of the event, we break down Tango into a scientific, step-by-step process using my 'TangoShastra' method. We focus on the biomechanics of movement and the internal feeling of the dance, moving away from the idea that Tango is about showing off.
What to Expect
- Progressive Learning: We structure classes to build your confidence, starting from the 'Tango Walk' (caminata) to more complex concepts like circularity and lead-follow mechanics. Whether you are a total beginner or looking to refine your technique, there is a workshop level for you.
- The Milonga Experience: A Milonga is where the community comes to life. Our festival evenings are dedicated to social dancing, featuring curated Golden Age Tango tracks. We follow traditional 'Codigos' (etiquette), including the 'Cabeceo'—the subtle art of inviting a partner with eye contact. It is about respect and communication.
- Inclusive Environment: We actively manage leader-to-follower ratios to keep the floor balanced. Our sessions are not about rigid gender roles; we teach everyone to both lead and follow. This shared responsibility is what makes the dance a true conversation.
This festival is about depth. We invite guest maestros to share their perspectives, and we hold discussion circles where you can ask questions about the roots and culture of Argentine Tango. Come in something comfortable—socks or smooth-soled shoes are perfect—and be ready to be part of something real.
Roopa Math
I am Roopa, and I run the Bangalore Tango Academy. I left engineering behind to build this community because I believe Tango is a language, not just a series of steps. When you join our festival, my goal is not to make you look like a dancer, but to help you feel the music and truly connect with your partner.
