Featured Moments from Bangalore Tango Academy
Tango is a conversation, not a performance. Explore how we teach rhythm, connection, and the art of the embrace through our unique TangoShastra method.
This moment captures the essence of what I teach: Tango as a conversation. It’s not about performance, but about the silent, profound connection you build with your partner, right in the heart of the dance.
I'm Roopa, and my journey with Tango has taken me from Bangalore to Buenos Aires. I combine technical precision with the soul of the dance to help you find your own unique expression on the floor.
Our introductory workshops are always full of energy and new faces. This video shows a typical class where we break down the fundamentals, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and confident from their very first step.
A collage from one of our anniversary Milongas, our monthly social dance parties. You can see the joy and connection shared between dancers of all levels, celebrating together as a community.
I was honored to be featured in the Deccan Chronicle, where I shared my story of bringing the authentic spirit of Argentine Tango to India. It’s a testament to the growing and passionate community we are building together.
A moment from our annual India Tango Festival, where I take a moment to thank the incredible team and teachers who make it all possible. This event is a celebration of our collective passion for Tango.
For those who want to dive deeper, I host immersive Tango Retreats. This is an opportunity to explore the dance in a focused, distraction-free environment, designed for serious learning and profound connection.
About this collection
You don't need a partner or a dance background to start. Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refine your technique, our classes focus on biomechanics and connection rather than just memorizing steps. We use a structured rotation system in every session, so you will always have someone to practice with, regardless of who you walk in with.
At Bangalore Tango Academy, we approach dance as a state of mind. My 'TangoShastra' method is a scientific, step-by-step guide designed to help you understand rhythm and technique, even if you have never danced before.
The Dance as a Conversation
I believe Tango is inward and intense. It is not about how you look or performing for an audience; it is about the silent, profound connection you build with your partner. In our classes, we break down complex movements into simple, manageable walking mechanics. We teach you to be an active follower and an empathetic leader, stripping away the traditional 'boss' dynamics often seen in dance.
What We Offer
- Beginner Workshops: If you are new, this is where you start. We cover the 'Tango Walk' (caminata) and embrace concepts in an intensive 2.5 to 3-hour format.
- Milonga Socials: Our monthly 'El Cabeceo' Milonga is where the community comes to life. It is a space to dress up, enjoy music, and apply what you have learned. We enforce traditional codes of etiquette, including the 'Cabeceo' (invitation by eye contact).
- Tango Retreats: For those who want to dive deeper, our immersive retreats offer a distraction-free environment to explore the emotional depth of the dance.
- Corporate & Performance: We also conduct interactive workshops for teams, focusing on trust-building and non-verbal communication.
Practical Details
We host our sessions in rented studio spaces across Koramangala and Indiranagar with smooth flooring. You do not need fancy shoes; socks or smooth-soled shoes are perfectly fine. If you are joining solo, do not worry—our 'Always YES' policy and active partner rotation ensure that everyone gets to dance.
Roopa Math
I’m Roopa. I spent years working as an embedded software engineer before I realized that my real life was happening on the dance floor. I founded Bangalore Tango Academy to teach Tango as it was meant to be—not as a show, but as a genuine conversation between two people.
