About Yoga with Props: Deepen Your Practice
Props often get a bad rap as 'beginner tools,' but in my studio, they are the difference between straining and growing. When you use a yoga block for a forward fold or a chair to support a deep stretch, you aren't taking a shortcut. You are creating the necessary space for your muscles to release instead of fighting against tension. It allows you to focus on the breath and the correct alignment rather than just survival.
In my classes, tools like wheels, blocks, chairs, and sticks are integrated into almost every session. We use these because I want my students to push their limits safely, without injury.
The Role of Each Prop
- Yoga Wheels: These are game-changers for those of us working desk jobs in IT hubs like Brookefield. They are incredible for backbends, opening the shoulders, and releasing chest tightness caused by hunching over a laptop.
- Blocks: I tell my students that blocks are there to bring the floor to you. They stabilize standing poses like Trikonasana and provide the necessary support for deep hip openers, ensuring you don't compromise your spine just to touch your toes.
- Chairs & Sticks: Chairs offer structural support for restorative work and safe backbend adjustments. We use sticks to keep the spine straight and shoulders open, which is highly effective for correcting posture and improving overall body coordination.
Why This Approach Works
My philosophy is that we use these tools not to make things easier, but to make them effective. You will find that using props actually accelerates your progress because you are training your body in the correct range of motion from day one. Instead of forcing a posture, you learn the mechanics of it.
We run these prop-supported sessions across our studios in Brookefield, Varthur, and Belathur. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned practitioner looking to refine your form, these tools will help you find a deeper, more sustainable version of your practice.
