About Ganpati Idol Making Workshops
This workshop is a 4-6 session project because we insist on working with traditional Shadu clay, which requires specific drying intervals to ensure structural integrity. We focus on teaching you to sculpt the base and trunk, allowing the clay to set properly before you move on to sanding and painting. It is a slow, meditative process, not a quick craft, so we recommend joining well ahead of the festival dates to give your Bappa the time it needs.
The Journey of Creating Your Bappa
Art is about the process, not just the finished result. In these seasonal sessions at our Kandivali and Borivali studios, we move away from ready-made moulds to teach you how to sculpt from scratch. You will learn to handle Shadu clay, which is eco-friendly and ideal for immersion rituals.
What the Workshop Covers
- Foundations: We start with the base structure and armature, learning how to balance weight so your idol is stable.
- Anatomy & Detailing: You will practice sculpting limbs, the trunk, and facial features. This is where you add your personal touch and expression to the idol.
- Finishing: After the clay sets, we cover sanding, priming, and painting. We show you how to apply acrylics or poster colors to give the idol a professional, vibrant finish.
