Set within a Coorg coffee plantation, this residence features a minimalist layout that bridges modern architectural volumes with the natural estate landscape.

The entrance to the Polibetta Farmhouse, where a minimalist design meets the lush Coorg landscape. A long Kota stone-clad wall guides visitors and frames the entry court, hinting at the views beyond.

The gravel entry court is a simple, contemplative space. The design uses clean lines, a low floating roof, and natural materials to create a calm sense of arrival before revealing the dramatic valley views.

The house is perched on the edge of the estate, with a covered veranda offering panoramic views of the misty valley. This is a space designed for quiet contemplation and enjoying the cool climate.

The home is divided into two main parts connected by a gallery. This design separates the common living areas from the private bedrooms, with a sky-lit internal court bringing light into the core of the house.

A well-lit linear gallery with a polished concrete floor connects the two wings of the house. One side opens to an outdoor court, ensuring the corridor is bright and feels connected to the outdoors.

An indoor plant adds a touch of green to the minimalist corridor. The design of these transitional spaces is as considered as the main rooms, ensuring a cohesive experience throughout the home.

About this collection

The layout of this residence relies on a central linear gallery, which separates private sleeping quarters from common living spaces. We incorporated a forty-foot Kota stone wall to guide entry, ensuring the interior architecture remains focused on the surrounding coffee plantation views rather than competing with them.

For the Polibetta Farmhouse project, the primary design challenge was to create a modern structure that felt honest within a sprawling coffee estate. We developed a two-wing plan connected by a well-lit, linear gallery that maintains sightlines to the outdoors throughout the day.

Material selection was driven by local availability and climatic response. We utilized cement oxide for flooring and white-rendered walls to create a light, reflective interior that contrasts with the misty Coorg climate. A key technical feature of the project is the upcycling of timber rafters from the previous structure, which were repurposed into false ceilings and custom door frames, reducing waste while adding warmth to the living areas.

Bathrooms incorporate ocean green granite in various finishes, creating a calm, monochromatic environment that responds to natural light via skylights. The overall structure is sited to maximize cross-ventilation and views, using a pitched roof system that provides protection from the heavy monsoon rains typical of the region. This project serves as a model for how contemporary architecture can respect rural site context without resorting to traditional decorative tropes.
