The foundation of Kuchipudi lies in the rhythmic precision of jatis and the discipline of technique. Here, we peel back the layers of performance to focus on the essential building blocks—posture, footwork, and the quiet consistency that makes this art form possible.

Here I am practicing a piece with nattuvangam by Kishore Mosali and choreography by Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. It is a joy to engage with the work of such masters.

As Martha Graham said, practice is performing an act of vision and faith over and over. This is how we learn to dance, and also how we learn to live.

This jati is from Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam’s Vasanta. It reminds me of Rumi's words to "Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free."

A simple exploration of Kuchipudi footwork. The grace of the dance is built upon the strength and clarity of each step.

The mirror in a dance studio is an honest friend. It reflects not just our movements but also our focus and our commitment to the art form.

A short practice of Shivashtakam. Even in simple practice clothes, the spirit of the dance, with its spins and powerful stances, comes through.

This is a classic jati from my Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. The studio floor reflects the movements, creating a dialogue between the dancer and her own image.

Revisiting a classic Kuchipudi tarangam in the studio. These traditional pieces are a wellspring of knowledge and beauty that I return to again and again.

This video shows the journey of a classic 7 beat jati from its raw form in practice to its final expression in a performance about Mohini. The creative process is a long and layered one.

Here you can see the lilt and flow of a Kuchipudi jati in a three beat time cycle, known as thishram. The rhythm creates a unique, swaying quality in the movement.

About The Practice Room: Jatis & Technique

In my practice room, we focus on the raw mechanics—the 'adavus' and rhythmic 'jatis'—that give Kuchipudi its signature grace. Whether you are refining your posture or dissecting a complex Vempati Chinna Satyam choreography, these sessions prioritize precision over performance. You will need a mirror, a clear space to move, and the patience to revisit the basics until they become second nature.

Kuchipudi is often celebrated for its grace, but that grace is built entirely upon a foundation of steel. My approach to 'The Practice Room' is to strip away the performance anxiety and return to the roots: the jatis (rhythmic patterns) and the precise physical vocabulary passed down by my Guru, Vempati Chinna Satyam.

Whether we are working on Angashuddhi (purity of limbs) or the intricate Netra Bheda (eye movements), the goal is to develop an intimate relationship with your own body. We break down the complex time cycles, moving from simple 3-beat sequences to the challenging, layered jatis that define a traditional Tarangam.

I often tell my students that we are not just memorizing steps; we are learning the architecture of the dance. In our 1-on-1 private mentorship sessions, we go granular—correcting the angle of the foot, the tension in the hand, or the transition between two rhythmic cycles. For those joining our group modules, the focus shifts to the collective energy of the practice, learning to hold your rhythm amidst the group.

Dance is a lifelong conversation between the artist and the art form. If you are looking to deepen your technical understanding—beyond just performing for an audience—I invite you to step into the practice room and find the joy in the sweat.
