The Healing Power of Kuchipudi Dance
Dance is more than performance. It is a way to find clarity, process emotions, and remain present when life feels overwhelming. I share here how this practice has been my anchor.
This is a simple truth I have come to know intimately. The power of dance to heal is truly amazing.
Through abhinaya, I learned to identify and express emotions. Giving a name to a feeling is liberating, and art gives us the vocabulary to do so.
In the weeks after my husband passed, I could not listen to music or think of dance. But as I returned to it, I found the songs and movements that give me joy and nourishment.
Much of classical dance is devotional. Understanding the philosophy behind concepts like Shiva or Krishna helps provide a sense of the bigger picture, which is empowering in difficult times.
Dance teaches you to be present. You cannot be effective on stage or in rehearsal if your mind and body are not fully there in the moment.
About The Healing Power of Dance
I often get asked if dance can truly assist with emotional weight. It is not a quick fix, but a rigorous practice of presence. Through Abhinaya, the art of expression, I help students learn how to identify and articulate emotions that often remain unspoken. We do not just learn steps. We learn how to name a feeling, hold it, and release it through deliberate movement. It is a slow, methodical process that requires patience with yourself.
For many, Indian classical dance is seen as a visual spectacle, but its roots are deeply intertwined with internal work. When I teach Kuchipudi, I rely on the Vempati Chinna Satyam style, which emphasizes precision and physical discipline. However, the true transformation happens when we introduce Abhinaya. This is where the dance becomes a language of the soul.
In my Abhinaya masterclasses, we dive into the poetry of Meera Bai or Tagore to understand how to embody a narrative. This is not about perfect posture alone. It is about the connection between your mental state and your physical expression. Whether you are a beginner looking to understand the basics or someone seeking a deeper connection to your own emotions, my workshops are designed to be a safe space for exploration.
I treat dance as a tool for grounding. In a world that demands constant attention, the studio becomes a place where you are allowed to be entirely present. If you are interested in exploring how classical dance can fit into your life for wellness or artistic growth, I offer tailored sessions that range from group workshops to private, one-on-one mentorship. We can work on your technical jatis, refine your expressive nuances, or simply start from the beginning. Asha kori apnara shob ashben, I hope you will join me so we can explore this journey together.
