My Kuchipudi Journey and Artistic Lineage
My path in dance began in Washington DC, a story of how a Bengali girl found her voice in the classical traditions of Andhra Pradesh. This is a look at the gurus and the history that shaped my understanding of Kuchipudi.
This is how my journey with Kuchipudi began. My mother was looking for the best teacher, not a specific style, and she found the wonderful Anuradha Nehru. I am in the white costume.
Here I am at eight years old in Washington D.C. with my fellow students and the ambassador. We were all students of the amazing Anuradha Nehru.
My favorite picture with my favorite person, Leela Samson, on her birthday. She has taught me so much more than just dance.
Here I am with my guru, Leela Samson. Her grace and wisdom are a constant source of inspiration, proving that age is just a number when you are guided by passion.
About My Journey & Gurus
You often ask how my training started given my background, and the reality is that it was a convergence of my mother's intuition and Anuradha Nehru's commitment. I did not choose the style; I chose the teacher. Learning from the Vempati Chinna Satyam lineage meant inheriting a rigorous vocabulary of jatis and posture, but the real lesson was discovering how to let those rigid structures breathe through personal expression.
For me, dance is not just about the final performance on stage. It is about the years of practice, the sweat, and the quiet moments in the studio where technique meets truth. My foundation was laid under the guidance of Anuradha Nehru in Washington DC. Watching her, I learned that a great teacher does not just demonstrate steps; she demonstrates a way of life.
Following that path brought me to the intense, precise world of the Vempati Chinna Satyam style. This school of Kuchipudi is known for its structural beauty and strict adherence to Angashuddhi (purity of body movement). It demands discipline—the jatis must be sharp, the rhythm precise, and the posture unwavering. Yet, as I progressed, I found a different kind of wisdom under Leela Samson. She taught me that grace and wisdom are timeless, and that the ultimate goal of any dancer is to make the audience feel, not just watch.
My journey from a student in the USA to a practitioner in India has been about finding my own voice while honoring these traditions. Whether you are looking to master the basics of the Vempati style or you want to explore Abhinaya (expressional dance) through poetry, my classes are designed to bridge that gap. We focus on the history, the theoretical Shlokas, and the lived experience of the dance. If you are ready to put in the work and explore the deeper meanings behind the movement, I invite you to join me.
