Dance is a conversation. Through my interactive workshops and lecture-demonstrations, we explore the history, technical nuance, and emotional depth of Kuchipudi together.

Sharing dance with children is one of my greatest joys. In this video, I am explaining how we use mudras, or hand gestures, to tell stories about forests, flowers, and animals.

A view from the stage during a program for school children at Cathedral school. I love sharing the art form with young, curious minds.

The students were so engaged and full of questions. Moments like these, where we can have an open dialogue about dance, are incredibly rewarding.

A close up from the school program, showing the children's reactions. Their energy and enthusiasm are a wonderful reminder of why we share our art.

Another view of the performance for the students. Bringing classical dance into schools helps connect the next generation to our rich cultural heritage.

In this video, I break down the rhythmic structure of a Kuchipudi jati, explaining how it combines patterns of three, four, and seven beats. Understanding the math behind the music is fascinating.

The reality of dancing is practice, sweat, and details. Here I am working with DSV Sastry in Hyderabad, taking time away from performing to focus on mindful movement and new ideas.

A wonderful memory from a workshop with my guru Leela Samson. Learning from her is pure joy, as she gives every student the space to be brave and discover new aspects of themselves.

An invitation to my solo performance in Kolkata. It had been many years, and I was so excited to return and share my work. Asha kori apnara shob ashben.

About Sharing the Art: Workshops & Lecture-Demonstrations

Whether we are breaking down a complex jati into its mathematical components or tracing the meaning behind a simple mudra, these sessions are designed to be a dialogue rather than a one-way lecture. My goal is to make the classical art form accessible, so we focus on the why as much as the how. Aamar mone hoy—I feel—that when you understand the history and the poetry behind the movement, the dance itself becomes far more meaningful.

Understanding the Art Form

My lecture-demonstrations, such as 'A Perspective - Drishtikon', go beyond basic performance. They are crafted for schools, colleges, and cultural institutions where the audience is eager to understand the development of Kuchipudi. We don't just watch; we talk about the evolution of the style, the significance of the Vempati Chinna Satyam lineage, and the way traditional themes are adapted for modern stages.

Workshop Structure

  • Foundational Technique: For those ready to move, we dive into the 'sweat and details'. We focus on Angashuddhi (purity of body movement), precise rhythmic footwork, and the alignment required for Vempati style training.

  • Abhinaya Masterclass: We dedicate time to the art of expression. This involves translating poetry—be it from Tagore, Meera Bai, or Annamacharya—into the subtle eye movements and hand gestures that tell a story. It is a slow, meditative process of translating text into physical emotion.

  • Interactive Dialogue: In these sessions, questions are welcome. I believe the learning process should include the space to be brave, to improvise, and to discover new aspects of oneself. Whether it is a two-day bootcamp or a lecture-demonstration for students, I aim to provide a safe space where you can engage with the material and leave with a deeper appreciation for the craft.

Everything I teach is rooted in my own journey and the wisdom passed down by my gurus. My hope is that we can share these stories together and find a common language through movement.
