Faces of India Character Portraits
I look for the stories written on faces, from the deep lines of a sadhu to the quiet dignity of a villager, bringing them to life with watercolour and acrylic.
A watercolour portrait from my "Sadhu" series. The strong sunlight and deep shadows help to define the subject's features and convey a sense of spiritual intensity.
An acrylic portrait of a man in a bright yellow turban, created during an online demonstration. Acrylics allow for bold, expressive brushwork and rich colour.
A watercolour portrait of a man in a vibrant orange turban. I used wet on wet techniques and splatters to create a dynamic and expressive feel.
A short video showing the detailing process for the white beard in this watercolour portrait. The contrast between the dark skin tone and the white hair is key to the painting's impact.
This watercolour portrait captures the intense gaze of the subject. I use a limited palette to create harmony and focus on the expression.
A quick watercolour study of a man with a striking presence. These sketches help me practice capturing emotion and character quickly.
A close up of the watercolour study, showing the texture and layering of the paint. Each brushstroke contributes to the overall feel of the portrait.
A watercolour portrait of an old man, with a focus on the effects of light and weather on his face. The background wash adds to the atmosphere of the piece.
This process video shows how the watercolour portrait of the old man was built up from a simple pencil sketch to a fully rendered painting.
A quick portrait study using Camel HD acrylic colours. I enjoy testing new materials to see how they handle and what effects I can achieve.
About Faces of India: Character Studies
When I approach a character study, I am looking for the atmosphere, not just the physical features. I pay close attention to how light interacts with skin tones and how a simple turban or scarf tells a larger cultural story. If you have a specific face or memory you want preserved, I work with professional, archival materials to ensure the piece lasts for generations.
Whether it is the intense gaze of a sadhu or the subtle expression of a villager, my goal is to document the raw emotion I find across India. I typically start with a rough pencil sketch to establish the composition, then layer on my chosen medium to build depth.
For these studies, I often lean towards watercolors because they allow for fluid, atmospheric backgrounds that contrast beautifully with detailed, realistic facial features. I use professional-grade Supervision watercolors and 300 GSM cotton rag paper for these pieces, ensuring the colors remain vibrant.
If you are interested in a custom commission, I can work from photographs to create a portrait that feels true to the subject. My studio is in Pune, but I regularly ship my artwork across India using safe, protective packaging. Whether you want an intimate A3 charcoal sketch or a large-scale acrylic portrait, we can discuss the medium that best fits your vision.
