Tributes in Paint: Portraits of Legends and Leaders
I create conceptual paintings that honor the stories and legacies of those who shaped our history and culture. Each tribute blends portraiture with symbolic elements to capture the essence of their journey.
A painting of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, inspired by the film "Chhaava." I wanted to capture the fierce spirit and royal presence of the great Maratha warrior.
On his birth anniversary, I painted this tribute to the great freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad. The artwork incorporates key moments from his life, like the Kakori train incident, to tell his story.
A large acrylic on canvas painting depicting the life and work of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. This piece, created for a national artist camp, shows the establishment of the Kesari and Mahratta newspapers.
A watercolour tribute to the legendary singer and actor, Kishore Kumar, on his birth anniversary. His expressive face was a joy to paint.
Here I am painting the portrait of Kishore Kumar outdoors. Taking my work into nature, even for a portrait, adds a different energy to the process.
The finished Kishore Kumar portrait, displayed in a field. It felt like a fitting way to honor an artist who brought so much life to his work.
A watercolour painting honouring former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The composition includes different moments from his life, set against the colours of the Indian flag.
About this collection
These paintings are not just simple portraits; they are visual stories. When I approach a tribute—whether for a freedom fighter, an artist, or a leader—I do not rely on a single reference photo. I research the subject’s life and achievements to build a composition that incorporates symbolic moments and historical context. The goal is to paint the person’s character and their contribution to history, not just their physical likeness.
My Approach to Tribute Painting
When you commission a tribute piece, we begin with a conversation about the subject. I want to understand what makes them significant to you. Is it a specific achievement, a period of their life, or the emotion they represent?
The Process I combine portraiture with narrative elements. For example, when painting a freedom fighter, I might include historical landmarks or symbolic imagery that grounds them in their specific time and place. I use heavy-body acrylics for larger canvases to create texture and depth, or professional-grade watercolours on 300 GSM cotton rag paper for a more atmospheric, soulful look.
Customization & Mediums
- Acrylics on Canvas: Best for large-scale works (20x24 inches or larger). This medium allows me to add intricate details to clothing, jewelry, or historical backgrounds.
- Watercolour: I use this for a more emotive, flowing style. It is particularly effective for capturing candid expressions or soft, atmospheric lighting.
Everything is painted by hand from scratch. I do not use digital filters or photo manipulation. Whether it is a tribute to a family elder or a national hero, the final artwork is finished with protective coatings—varnish for acrylics or fixative sprays for charcoal—to ensure it lasts for generations.
Amit Dhane
Art has been part of my life since I was a child, thanks to my father. I am a Pune-based artist who believes that every portrait should tell a story, whether it is a tribute to a national hero or a family member. When I am not in my studio working on the next commission, I am out chasing the light for my landscapes or painting with my kids.
