I use oils and pastels to capture the soul behind the face. These studies go beyond simple likeness, aiming to document the specific emotional weight and character of a person in a single frame.

A study of an old man with a beard, done in soft pastels. I focused on the reflection in his glasses and the texture of his beard, using layers of color to create depth and rhythm.

A soft pastel portrait titled "Grandfather." This piece is an exploration of age and emotion, using the texture of the paper and the medium to render the weathered quality of the skin.

A close-up from my "Smile Spectrum" series, painted with oil on canvas. This piece uses thick, expressive impasto strokes to capture the pure, uninhibited joy in a child's smile.

A live demonstration portrait of a model with a ponytail, painted in oil on canvas. The focus was on capturing the profile and form with rapid, decisive brushstrokes in a limited time.

This portrait of a man in a red turban was painted as a live demonstration. The bold color and energetic knife work are intended to capture the subject's strong presence and character.

A watercolor on paper portrait titled "Grandmother." The fluid nature of watercolor is used here to convey a sense of contemplation and memory, capturing a quiet, thoughtful moment.

An oil sketch of a young woman with her eyes closed. This is a rapid study in expression, focusing on the play of light and shadow to create a serene and introspective mood.

An oil on canvas portrait of an elderly woman. The warm pinks and reds of her headscarf and the gentle expression were the focus of this character study.

A soft pastel sketch exploring color and form. This expressive portrait of a woman uses a non-naturalistic palette to convey emotion and mood.

Thinking Transition," an oil on linen portrait. The loose, energetic brushwork is meant to convey the fluid and complex nature of thought and internal reflection.

About Expressive Portraiture & Character Studies

When I work on a portrait, I prioritize techniques like the wet-on-wet oil application or deliberate pastel layering to keep the energy raw. You will notice that my focus is not just on photographic accuracy, but on how light interacts with skin and the quiet stories told by an expression. Whether I am painting an elderly subject or conducting a rapid live demonstration, I am searching for the specific emotional truth that exists before a pose becomes static.

My process for character studies and portraits is built on a foundation of academic rigor mixed with a drive for emotional resonance. I do not aim for a mere copy of a photograph. Instead, I use oil on fine grain linen or soft pastels to translate a subject's character into texture and light.

The Process

We begin with a conversation about the subject. I need to understand the memory or the specific emotion you want to convey. If you choose an oil portrait, we will utilize professional-grade paints and a technique that combines realism for the facial features with impasto knife work for the surrounding atmosphere. This approach creates a physical, sculptural quality that brings the painting to life.

Technical Details

  • Surface: I exclusively use fine grain linen canvas for oils due to its superior texture and longevity compared to cotton.
  • Finish: Every oil piece is varnished to provide UV protection and dust resistance.
  • Sketches: If you prefer a more focused, monochromatic study, I offer academic graphite and charcoal portraits on acid-free, archival-quality paper (180 to 250 GSM).
  • Timeline: Because oil paint requires time to dry and layer properly, please allow 3 to 5 weeks for completion.

This work is a collaboration. I look for the fleeting expression that tells a story, and I translate it into a permanent form that carries that history forward.

I am Abhijeet. My practice is rooted in years of academic training, but my perspective is shaped by the daily observations I make while wandering through the city. I believe art should be honest and human, which is exactly what I bring to every commission I undertake.
