Student Bharatanatyam Choreography & Arangetram Coaching
From your first jathi to a full-scale debut, I help students build a repertoire that combines precise technique with authentic storytelling.
My student Navya during the premiere of her solo piece 'KRISHNA'. I work one on one with students to choreograph and conceptualize solo works, guiding them from the initial idea to their debut performance.
My students Rheanna and Rochelle rehearsing for their debut Margam. Preparing two dancers for a joint debut is a unique process of creating choreography that highlights their individual strengths and their synergy as a pair.
My student Dhanya performing in Chennai. It is incredibly rewarding to see students take the choreography we've worked on and make it their own on stage, performing with confidence and grace.
My student Vibha performing at our Punyah Theatre. I provide opportunities for students to perform in intimate settings, helping them build stage presence and connect with an audience.
Students from the Upadhye School of Dance performing at the Chidambaram Natyanjali festival. I choreograph group pieces for students to perform at major cultural events, giving them invaluable stage experience.
Rehearsing with our students for a group performance in Hyderabad. The rehearsal process is key to ensuring the group is synchronized and that every student understands their part in the larger choreographic picture.
A snippet of our students performing a jathi. I choreograph pure dance pieces like jathis to build the students' command over rhythm, speed, and precision, which are foundational skills in Bharatanatyam.
Sharing the stage with my students is always a special experience. This performance shows a group piece where I dance alongside them, which is a wonderful way to connect and share energy.
'Kaleidoscope', a piece I choreographed for the students of Upadhye School of Dance. This work was designed to showcase the collective energy and vibrant talent of a large group of young dancers.
A clip from 'Kaleidoscope', a piece composed by Parshwanath Upadhye. Working on group choreography for students involves creating patterns and movements that are both challenging and achievable.
About Nurturing the Next Generation: Student Choreography
I focus heavily on Angashuddhi, the precision of your limbs, because technique is the grammar of Bharatanatyam. Whether we are preparing a 10-minute solo for a festival or a complete Margam for an arangetram, my goal is to guide you through the process of not just executing movements, but understanding the lyrical meaning behind every gesture.
My approach to student choreography is built on the foundation we set at Punyah Dance Company and Upadhye School of Dance. I don't believe in giving students stock routines. Instead, we work on identifying your strengths and challenges to create a performance that feels honest.
The Choreography Process
When I work with a student, we look at three things: rhythm, expression, and stamina.
- Solo Repertoire: For those preparing for festivals or arangetrams, we start by selecting a piece that suits your range. I provide private sessions where we break down the Talam and Jathis, ensuring you understand the rhythmic calculations rather than just memorizing steps. You will get reference audio and notation sheets so you can practice with clarity at home.
- Group Ensemble: Group work is about synchronization. I choreograph patterns and floor formations that force the group to move as a single unit. We focus on clean-up sessions where we physically correct lines and angles, ensuring that every dancer contributes to the overall visual balance.
From Studio to Stage
Choreography is only half the battle. The other half is understanding the stage. I help students with technical details that often get overlooked, such as light cueing, entrance strategies, and stage presence. For students doing a debut production, we look at the entire arc of the performance—not just the dance, but how to hold the audience's attention from the first movement to the final pose. Whether you are in Bangalore or planning for a project elsewhere, my aim is to prepare you to perform with the same confidence I bring to my own shows.
Adithya
I’m Adithya, and for me, being a guru is just as much a performance as dancing on stage. I work closely with my students at Punyah Dance Company to turn raw effort into something that holds the audience’s attention, whether it's their first time under the lights or a full-scale debut.
