A performance is only the final result. This is a look at the studio hours, the technical checks, and the collaboration that goes into every production.

A rehearsal in the studio for 'Raag-Raagini'. This is where the choreography is born, refined, and set to music. The studio is our laboratory for creative exploration.

A candid moment during a break in rehearsals in Mumbai. The process involves long hours, but also moments of rest and camaraderie with fellow artists.

A glimpse of the technical check at a theatre in Calgary. Before any show, we spend hours on stage working with the lighting and sound technicians to ensure every element of the production is perfect.

A view from the wings during a performance of 'PADAM'. This perspective shows the complex lighting setup and the artists waiting for their cue, a side of the show the audience rarely sees.

Another backstage view of 'PADAM'. You can see the scale of the production and the number of artists involved, all working together to create the magic on stage.

The stage being prepped with flowers before a show. The setup and stage design are integral to the performance, and a lot of work goes into preparing the space.

About The Creative Process: Behind the Curtain

The jump from a studio rehearsal to a professional stage is where the real work happens. We do not just dance; we coordinate with lighting technicians to ensure the floor plans, floral layouts, and stage shadows work with the choreography, not against it. It is that technical precision that transforms a raw studio piece into a complete performance.

Every production I lead, whether it is a solo Bharatanatyam performance or a large-scale ensemble piece, follows a long journey that starts in the studio.

My process relies heavily on the laboratory of the studio, where we break down rhythm and expression before they ever reach an audience. This is where we make mistakes, refine our lines, and experiment with movement.

Collaboration is the backbone of this work. I am rarely alone; the live orchestra—the vocalists, mridangam, violin, and flute players—are essential partners. We work to ensure that the music and dance are not just present, but truly in sync.

Beyond the movement, there is the technical reality of the stage. From international concert halls to venues in Bangalore, we spend hours during technical checks adjusting lighting cues and entrance strategies. When you see a show like 'PADAM', you are seeing the result of these quiet hours of preparation and a commitment to storytelling that goes beyond the steps.

My work is defined by the balance between classical technique and honest storytelling. Whether I am guiding a student through their Arangetram or choreographing a large ensemble, I focus on the precision of the movement and the intention behind it. I believe if you look closely, the process reveals as much as the performance.
