Hand Shadow Storytelling by the Acharya Family
Shadow play is a dance of hands, and for us, it is a conversation between generations. We bring stories to life together.
This is how our magic is made. It takes multiple pairs of hands, working in perfect sync, to create complex scenes like this family of deer.
About Our Family of Artists
When we perform our shadow storytelling, the most important part is the timing between me and my children. Pooja and Pratheek know the subtle cues in my movements, which allows us to switch between complex shapes like a galloping deer or a soaring bird without breaking the narrative flow. It creates a rhythm that feels less like a performance and more like a shared story.
When I started using my hands to create Neralu - Belaku (shadow and light), I never imagined it would become a family tradition. Today, my kids are my partners on stage. We do not just throw shapes on a screen; we rehearse to ensure that our collective hands, light, and storytelling move in sync.
This setup requires a specific environment to shine. Because our acts depend on the sharpness of the silhouettes, we need a venue that allows for total darkness near the stage. Our 'Shadow Siblings' act brings a unique energy that solo performances often miss. Whether it is a Panchatantra tale or a custom story for your corporate event, having multiple artists allows for simultaneous actions—like a flock of birds moving across the horizon while a hero walks below.
If you are looking to book us, please note that we travel across India. For local events in Bengaluru, we manage our own screen and light setup, but for events further afield, we just need a clear, dark space to set up our professional rear-projection screen. We bring our own gear, and we are ready to adapt our stories to fit the mood of your gathering.
