We turn classic tales into magical, multi-sensory experiences. From shadow puppet shows to festive celebrations, we make stories come alive for children.

For Christmas, we told the story of the nativity using a beautiful shadow puppet show. The darkened room and glowing screen created a truly magical and reverent atmosphere for the children.

Parents and children were captivated by the shadow puppets during our Christmas special. This unique storytelling form is a wonderful way to engage the imagination.

Our 5th anniversary celebration was a huge success, filled with stories, games, and community spirit. Here, our storytellers engage the crowd with a classic tale.

Children gather around the story table to get a closer look at the props used in our anniversary storytelling of "The Three Little Pigs."

Another view of the enchanting Christmas shadow puppet show, a highlight of our holiday celebrations.

We also feature books by visiting authors. Here are copies of "Megha's Autumn Equation" ready for a special author reading session.

A story is told using a book and puppets, followed by a dandiya decorating craft and an energetic dance, making for a multi sensory experience.

A storyteller uses a string of paper dolls to tell a story, a simple yet effective form of puppetry that the children love.

A child excitedly points at the Kamishibai, a Japanese story box that we use to create a mini theatrical experience.

A heartwarming moment from our 5th anniversary, where we celebrate a child who is the same age as our library.

About Special Celebrations & Puppet Shows

Our storytelling isn't just about reading words on a page. We use shadow puppets to recreate festive scenes, or Japanese Kamishibai story boxes to build suspense and excitement. By adding props, music, and simple crafts to our sessions, we ensure every child is part of the action, keeping them engaged long after the story ends.

Bringing Stories Off the Page

When we host a session, our goal is to move beyond the book. We want children to feel the atmosphere of the story, whether that is the quiet reverence of a Christmas shadow puppet performance or the high energy of an anniversary celebration.

Why We Use Puppetry and Props

We find that children engage deeply when they have something to watch and interact with. Our use of Kamishibai (traditional Japanese story boxes) and homemade puppets allows us to:

  • Build Anticipation: The theatrical reveal of each scene keeps children focused.
  • Encourage Participation: Whether it is making a Christmas tree craft or decorating dandiya after a story, children take the lessons home in their hands.
  • Simplify Complex Emotions: Using puppets allows us to address difficult themes like kindness and honesty in a way that feels playful and safe for children aged 3 and above.

Join Our Community

These special celebration events are a core part of life at our Rustam Bagh library. They are not just performances, but community gatherings where parents, children, and our storytellers come together to share laughter, music, and the occasional bit of messy, creative fun. We keep our sessions interactive, meaning there is always room for a question, a song, or a high-five when the story concludes.

We are Ourstoryshelf, a community library here to make reading an adventure. When we host puppet shows or themed events, our goal is to get kids laughing and asking questions about the stories we share. We love seeing them engaged, whether they are watching shadow puppets or crafting their own story props.
