The dining room is where life and hospitality converge. I design these spaces to be worthy of your most memorable gatherings, blending grand architectural backdrops with the warmth of fine textiles and bespoke furniture.

A full view of a majestic, double-height dining room. The soaring ceilings, grand fireplace, and twin crystal chandeliers create an unforgettable sense of scale, perfect for hosting grand dinners while surrounded by timeless beauty.

A close-up of the fireplace seating area within the grand dining room. The two moss-green velvet armchairs offer a comfortable spot for conversation before or after a meal, adding a touch of warmth to the formal space.

This angle reveals the floor-to-ceiling library wall that serves as a dramatic backdrop to the dining table. This feature transforms the room into a dining library, a space that celebrates both fine food and literature.

This dining experience is defined by fine textiles and intricate decor. The chairs are upholstered in a delicate patterned fabric, set against a stunning wall mural of a classical landscape, all under a brilliant crystal chandelier.

Another perspective of the lavish dining room, showcasing the beautiful contrast between the classic checkerboard marble floor and the soft, organic forms in the wall mural. The entire scene evokes a sense of European grandeur.

I designed this dining nook for more intimate gatherings. The round table encourages conversation, while the damask-upholstered chairs and coffered ceiling maintain the home's overall feeling of timeless, classical elegance.

A simple yet profoundly elegant dining setup. The solid wood table and contemporary upholstered chairs are set against a backdrop of classic wall paneling, creating a space that is both modern in its simplicity and classic in its proportions.

A dining experience framed by large windows and heavy drapes. The design uses natural light to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere, while the dark wood sideboard provides ample storage and a surface for serving.

This dining room combines the formality of a grand library with the function of a dining space. The wall-to-wall white shelving is filled with books, creating a sophisticated and intellectual atmosphere for any meal.

About Opulent Dining Spaces

Designing a grand dining room requires careful calibration, especially when working with double-height ceilings. I focus heavily on the relationship between chandelier scale and floor proportions, ensuring the fixtures anchor the space without overwhelming it. When we plan these layouts, we map out exact wainscoting heights and paneling grids to frame your furniture, creating a balanced backdrop that feels both historic and intentional from every angle.

The Anatomy of a Grand Dining Room

A truly opulent dining space is not just about the furniture, but the dialogue between architecture and interior styling. My process begins with structural planning. Whether I am incorporating classic wainscoting, coffered ceilings, or grid paneling, every architectural element is measured to guide the eye toward the center of the room.

Materiality and Texture

To achieve the French-inspired warmth I am known for, I prioritize a sensory experience. I often recommend:

  • Flooring: Authentic Italian marble or herringbone wood floors provide a timeless foundation that grounds the room's grandeur.
  • Wall Treatments: Custom molding profiles are essential. They add shadow, depth, and character to walls that might otherwise feel flat.
  • Textiles: Using heavy linens, velvet upholstery, and double-layered drapery with blackout linings does more than look beautiful; it also improves the room's acoustics, ensuring conversations remain intimate during larger dinner parties.

Lighting as Art

In these high-ceilinged spaces, lighting serves as the jewelry of the room. I carefully select crystal chandeliers that scale appropriately to the dining table. I also integrate layered lighting—sconces, coves, and table lamps—to allow the mood of the room to shift from a bright family breakfast to a candlelit evening dinner. Every finish, from antique brass to PVD gold, is curated to complement the existing color palette, ensuring a cohesive and sophisticated result.
