Advanced Yoga for Kids: Flexibility and Strength Training
Yoga is India’s gift to the world, and it is never too early to start. Here is how we help children build discipline, flexibility, and confidence through advanced asana practice.
This is an example of the advanced sequences we practice, flowing from an inversion like a handstand directly into a backbend. This builds strength, coordination, and grace.
Achieving a full front split is a milestone that shows dedication and progress. My classes provide the structured training needed to develop this level of flexibility.
This video shows a student practicing her 'Chakrasana walk' or wheel pose walk. This is a dynamic exercise that strengthens the back, arms, and legs while improving mobility.
Here, a student performs a standing Chakrasana, or wheel pose, dropping back from a standing position. We practice this against a wall initially to build the confidence and strength required.
This is an advanced seated posture that requires extreme flexibility in the hips and spine. We work towards such asanas gradually through consistent practice in my online and studio classes.
This young student demonstrates the full execution of Chakrasana from a standing start. This pose is excellent for spinal flexibility and opening the chest.
A student holds a deep standing backbend, grasping her ankles. This posture shows significant progress in flexibility and balance, which we develop over time.
About Advanced Asanas & Flexibility
We do not rush into difficult shapes. I use specialized gear like wall-mounted ropes and yoga wheels to support your child's spine as they work towards poses like full splits and backbends. This setup allows for safe, hands-on adjustments, ensuring your child learns the correct technique while building real strength.
Our Approach to Advanced Asanas
Yoga is more than just stretching. When we work on advanced postures, the goal is 'urja' (energy) and controlled movement. In my Rohini studio, we prioritize safety above all else.
Prop-Assisted Development We use wall-mounted ropes (Yoga Kurunta) and yoga wheels to assist with spinal traction. These tools are essential for children as they develop the flexibility needed for backbends and inversions. By using these props, students can safely hold postures that would be risky to attempt on a flat floor without guidance. It helps them build confidence before moving to free-standing poses.
The Curriculum
- Foundational Strength: We start by building the core, which is necessary for any advanced asana.
- Progressive Training: Whether it is a Headstand or a full Split, every child advances at their own pace. We do not use a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Discipline & Mindfulness: 'Yog se bhage rog hai.' Beyond the physical, we incorporate Pranayama to improve concentration, which is especially helpful for kids.
Class Structure I keep my in-studio batches small, with only 8-12 students. This is a deliberate choice so I can provide 100% attention to every child. If you are joining us online, we focus on floor-based asanas and cardio that do not require studio equipment. My goal is to make sure every child learns that with consistency, their body can achieve more than they thought possible.
