Deepening Your Yoga Practice with Props & Variations
Think of props not as training wheels, but as essential tools to find your true expression in a pose. Whether you are working on flexibility or just want to feel safer in your stretches, these variations help us grow without forcing our bodies into shapes they aren't ready for.
Variations are key to deepening your practice. This video shows how adding a bind to a pose can increase flexibility, deepen stability, and help correct alignment.
Props are your friends. Here, I'm using a yoga strap to work on my alignment and deepen the stretch in Natarajasana (Dancer's Pose), making the full expression of the pose more accessible.
About Working with Props & Variations
Instead of straining to reach your foot in poses like Natarajasana (Dancer's Pose), using a simple yoga strap allows you to maintain integrity in your shoulders and spine. It is not about how deep you go, but how consciously you move; using a strap helps you avoid the common mistake of arching too sharply and compressing your lower back.
Why Props Are Your Best Friend
Many students think props are only for beginners, but in my experience, they are vital for everyone. When we rush to 'look' like the yogis on social media, we often sacrifice alignment. A strap or a block isn't a crutch—it is an extension of your arm, allowing you to find the correct muscle engagement without the strain.
My Approach to Variations
My classes blend Hatha and Ashtanga, and I firmly believe that one size does not fit all. If you are joining my group Zoom sessions, I encourage you to use whatever you have at home—a belt, a book, or a pillow. Here is how I teach using these tools:
- For Tight Hamstrings: We use straps in seated forward folds to keep the spine straight rather than rounding the back and collapsing into the chest.
- For Stability: In standing poses, blocks bring the floor closer to you, helping you maintain a steady base and square your hips properly.
- For Deeper Awareness: Using props can actually make a pose harder by forcing you to hold it with control, rather than 'hanging' into your joints.
Moving from Flexibility to Strength
I focus on strength-building yoga so you grow stable, inside and out. It is easy to get hyper-flexible and lose stability. By using props to guide our movements, we ensure that we are building the functional muscle power needed to support our joints. If you feel like your progress has stalled or you are struggling with a specific pose, I often recommend a 1-on-1 session. We can look at your practice via video call, discuss your injury history or goals, and find the exact modifications that work for your unique body structure.
