Heritage Reimagined: Modern Banaras Haveli Interiors
We breathe new life into traditional spaces. This project blends timeless Chunar sandstone and lime plaster with modern layouts for contemporary living.
The haveli's exterior showcases a blend of heritage and modernity. Traditional elements like the jharokha balcony and arched colonnade are crafted from local sandstone, set against clean, lime-plastered walls for a timeless architectural statement.
The haveli's swimming pool is a tranquil oasis. The design features a pergola supported by traditional stone arches, creating a play of light and shadow on the water that connects the leisure space with the building's historic character.
The living area is a study in textural richness and cultural narrative. A heavy wooden beam ceiling and traditional Indian artwork are balanced by contemporary furniture and geometric stone inlay flooring, creating a cohesive and inviting space.
Even the bathroom is a testament to heritage-inspired luxury. A custom-carved mirror, traditional lantern-style lighting, and a distressed wall finish complement the modern fixtures, creating a spa-like retreat with a story to tell.
This expansive living room was designed for community and conversation. Multiple seating arrangements, a large traditional rug, and warm, layered lighting create a welcoming atmosphere that reflects my philosophy of designing for people, not just for aesthetics.
Another view of the haveli's living space, highlighting the seamless integration of traditional art and modern comfort. The design emphasizes natural light and open flow, making the large room feel both grand and intimate.
The master suite combines the romance of a four-poster bed with the richness of Indian textiles and art. The space is designed as a personal sanctuary, with a dedicated work area and ample natural light, all unified by the warm tones of wood and stone.
The formal dining area is designed for grand entertaining, featuring a long wooden table, classic seating, and a modern brass jali screen. The space is a blend of textures, from the intricate rug to the exposed wooden ceiling, creating an immersive dining experience.
This mood board captures the essence of the Banaras haveli project. It showcases the key design elements, from the color palette and hand-painted motifs to the textures of wood, stone, and brass that define the interior spaces.
About Heritage Reimagined: A Banaras Haveli
Redesigning a historic haveli is more than a renovation. It is a structural conversation with the past. We integrate modern MEP systems and reinforced stone load-bearing walls without disturbing the original architectural narrative. If you are looking to adapt a heritage structure, we focus on preserving the traditional lime plaster techniques and stone carving details while upgrading your space for luxury and comfort.
Our Approach to Heritage Preservation
Designing within the walls of a heritage property like a Banaras haveli requires a delicate balance. Our process starts with empathy for the existing structure. We do not impose modern trends; instead, we listen to the building.
We focus on two key areas:
- Material Integrity: We use regionally sourced materials such as Chunar sandstone and traditional lime plaster. These materials breathe, age gracefully, and maintain the thermal comfort that stone load-bearing systems are known for.
- Adaptive Reuse: Inserting modern amenities like HVAC systems, functional kitchens, and luxury bathrooms into centuries-old layouts is a technical challenge. We specialize in concealing these modern layers so they disappear into the heritage aesthetic, preserving the soul of the room while delivering 21st-century functionality.
Why Design Matters
Design is not about applause or following algorithms. It is about the stories that live in your spaces. Whether it is a hand-carved teakwood door or a geometric stone inlay floor, every element is chosen to evoke the splendor of the past while ensuring the space feels lived-in and real. We manage site supervision closely to ensure that our stone masons and fresco painters execute the work with the same reverence used generations ago.
If you have a historic property that needs a fresh perspective without losing its identity, we are here to help you navigate the complexity of heritage restoration.
