Authentic Kerala Mural and Cultural Art
I bring the timeless stories of our traditions to life. From the grace of Kathakali to the divine energy of Theyyam, each mural is hand-painted with deep respect for our heritage.
This video shows the detailed brushwork involved in a Kathakali painting. Capturing the authentic colors and expressions of this unique Kerala art form is something I do with great care. Please support my work.
Ente ponnu Muthappa. This mural detail shows the Parassinikadavu Muthappan, a revered Theyyam from North Kerala. I try to capture the divine energy of Malabar's Theyyam traditions in my art.
About Capturing Kerala's Culture
When I paint these murals, I use the traditional Panchavarna palette—red, yellow, green, black, and white—along with the 'dot shading' technique to give the figures real depth. This is a labor-intensive process that can take days, so I recommend ensuring your wall surface is smooth and prepped at least two weeks before I arrive to ensure the acrylics set perfectly.
Whether it's a Kathakali performance, a temple procession, or the fierce gaze of Muthappan, I believe art shouldn't just be viewed—it should be felt. When I work on these cultural themes, I don't use stencils or digital prints. Everything you see, from the elaborate jewelry details on a deity to the expressions of the dancers, is hand-sketched and painted.
My process relies on the 'dot shading' technique. It is a slow, meditative method. By layering tiny dots of color, I create the illusion of roundness and skin texture that flat painting simply cannot achieve. If you are looking to bring this energy into your home or commercial space, we need to look at the wall surface first. I typically work on high-quality cement plaster walls or directly on primed canvas.
For larger projects, like temple murals or convention center narratives, I am joined by my core team at Artkada. We have painted huge murals across the country, handling the intricate character sketching myself while my team manages the backgrounds and color fills. If you have a specific scene in mind—perhaps a favorite Vallamkali moment or a religious narrative—let me know. We can translate that story onto your wall, creating a permanent piece of Kerala’s soul in your living room.
