About this collection

These Channapatna necklaces use adjustable cotton dori, which makes them much easier to size and style than rigid metal alternatives. Because each bead is turned by hand on a lathe, there will be subtle variations in the finish. If you are looking for a specific colour palette for an occasion, please check with us on current batch availability before ordering.

Our approach to accessories is simple: we want them to feel like a natural extension of your day.

Channapatna Jewellery

We work with artisans to keep the 200-year-old lac-turnery craft relevant. These pieces are made from 'Hale' wood, a soft ivory wood that is turned on a lathe and finished with vibrant, organic dyes. Unlike heavy metal jewellery, these necklaces and bangles are incredibly lightweight. You will notice a gentle wooden sound when you wear the bangles, a sensory detail that reminds you they are made from nature, not mass-produced plastic.

Chettinad Woven Bags

Functionality matters as much as the weave. We use high-grade plastic wire for our totes, employing the traditional Chettinad knotting technique. This creates a rigid, water-resistant structure that stands upright, making them reliable laptop bags or beach totes. Whether it is a vibrant Madras check or a solid colour block, these bags are built to last and carry your daily essentials.

Why Handcrafted?

Every piece you see here is a conversation between hand and heritage. We work with artisans like Pallavi, who leads her own workshop, ensuring that each purchase supports a craft cluster rather than an assembly line. When you choose these pieces, you are keeping a tradition alive. If you have questions about care or want to know about our upcoming batches, we are happy to chat.

I am Karthik, and at Varnam, we do not follow algorithms; we follow the curve of the wood and the weave of the wire. We are a collective of folks trying to ensure that age-old skills like Channapatna lac-turnery remain part of our daily lives, not just museum pieces. We exist because you appreciate things that have a story.
