Mastering Boxing Fundamentals: Lessons in Technique
Boxing isn't about shortcuts. It's about discipline, biomechanics, and technical mastery. In these lessons, I break down the basics—from stance and footwork to defensive slips and power punches—so you can build your game on a solid foundation.
Every great boxer starts with the basics. In Lesson 1 of my boxing series, I explain the two primary stances, Orthodox and Southpaw, and show you how to find your balance and position correctly.
In Lesson 2, I introduce the six fundamental punches in boxing. This video focuses on the jab and the cross, breaking down the proper form, shoulder rotation, and body mechanics for maximum power and efficiency.
Lesson 3 is all about the hook punch. I demonstrate the correct 90-degree angle and how to generate power from your legs, waist, and shoulder rotation for both the left and right hook.
The uppercut is a devastating punch when thrown correctly. In Lesson 4, I teach the mechanics of the uppercut, emphasizing how to use your legs and core to generate upward force while maintaining a solid guard.
Movement is everything in boxing. Lesson 5 covers the four directions of footwork: forward, backward, left, and right. I explain how to move efficiently while maintaining your stance and balance.
In Lesson 6, we combine movement and punching. I demonstrate how to throw the jab-cross combination while stepping forward and backward, a crucial skill for controlling the distance in a fight.
Lesson 7 focuses on throwing the hook punch while on the move. I break down the footwork and body twist needed to generate power in your hooks whether you are advancing or retreating.
Building on our movement drills, Lesson 8 teaches how to throw the uppercut while moving forward and backward. This helps you learn to find opportunities for close-range power shots.
Protecting your hands is non-negotiable. In Lesson 9 of my boxing series, I provide a clear, step-by-step guide on how to properly wrap your hands using a 4-meter bandage to prevent injury.
Lesson 11 is about defense. I teach one of the most important defensive skills: the slip. Learn how to evade the jab and cross by using subtle head movement and shoulder rotation.
About Master the Fundamentals: Our Boxing Lessons
If you are starting out, don't worry about hitting hard yet. Focus on your stance and movement first. Many people come to my academy and try to throw power punches on day one, which just leads to bad habits. In these videos, I show you how to properly wrap your hands to avoid injury and why your footwork dictates your punch power.
Boxing is a technical sport. Whether you are training for fitness or planning to compete, you need to understand the mechanics. My approach is heavily influenced by the USSR school of boxing, which prioritizes balance, economy of motion, and precise angles.
The Foundation of Your Stance
Everything starts with how you stand. If your feet aren't positioned correctly, you cannot generate power or move efficiently. I teach both Orthodox and Southpaw stances, ensuring you understand the weight distribution and guard placement. If you start with a sloppy stance, every punch you throw afterward will be compromised.
Generating Power Through Mechanics
A common misconception is that power comes from the arms. It doesn't. Real power comes from your legs, waist, and shoulder rotation. Whether you are throwing a jab, a cross, or an uppercut, you need to engage your core and pivot your feet. In these tutorials, I break down the six fundamental punches, focusing on the kinetic chain that makes them effective.
Defensive Responsibility
You cannot be a complete boxer if you only know how to attack. Defense is non-negotiable. We cover the slip, the parry, and how to use your elbows to deflect incoming shots. If you can control the distance and make your opponent miss, you have already won half the battle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Shortcutting the basics: Beginners often skip hand wrapping or footwork drills. Don't. Always use a 4-meter wrap to protect your wrists and knuckles.
- Over-reaching: Throwing punches from too far away makes you vulnerable. Learn to manage distance using your footwork drills.
- Tensing up: If your shoulders are rigid, your punches will be slow. Stay loose until the moment of impact.
My classes in GTB Nagar focus on this structured progression. We don't do random cardio; we do purposeful training that builds a fighter's mindset.
