Quirky Ceramic Decor & Unique Handcrafted Gifts
Finding joy in the little things starts here. From sculpted chess sets to desk companions, these pieces are made to add a bit of whimsy to your everyday.
Game night, but make it art. A hand moves a piece on my "Cocoa Clash" ceramic chess set, which sits on a beautiful marble table. It's a functional sculpture that invites you to play.
Meet "Toto Cal," my ceramic calendar inspired by the beloved anime character. This pre-order announcement shows the whimsical, hand-painted calendar that brings a touch of rustic charm to your desk.
The making of a neighbor. This video shows the process of sculpting a large Totoro figure from clay, from shaping the body to adding the tiny details. It was a project made with so much love.
A small, hand-sculpted cat figure, standing proudly in my studio. This piece, which I call "Luna," is a reminder to find comfort and peace in your own company.
A herd of tiny dinosaurs, fresh from the kiln. These miniature sculptures are glazed in earthy, muted tones and are perfect for adding a touch of prehistoric fun to a shelf or desk.
A top-down view of the "Cocoa Clash" chess set. The pieces are all uniquely shaped and glazed, making each set a one-of-a-kind work of art.
A close-up of the "Cocoa Clash" chess pieces. You can see the charming imperfections and the way the pastel glazes have settled, giving each warrior its own personality.
About this collection
Every object you see here started as a block of clay in my Kodathi Gate studio. I do not aim for factory-made perfection; I look for character. Whether it is a hand-sculpted chess piece with a wonky edge or a calendar character that keeps you company, these items are meant to be held, used, and noticed. They are sturdy, fired at high heat, and designed to age gracefully alongside your own stories.
When I talk about quirky decor, I mean pieces that invite conversation. My 'Cocoa Clash' chess set isn't just for playing; it is a tactile experience where each piece has a personality. If you are looking for mass-produced, identical items, you might find my work surprising—I leave the fingerprints, the slight warps, and the raw textures visible. This is the wabi-sabi philosophy I live by at The Janbo.
Most of these artistic sculptures, like my miniature dinosaurs or the 'Toto Cal' perpetual calendar, are hand-built. Unlike wheel-thrown pottery, which follows a rotational symmetry, these pieces are sculpted by hand, allowing me to capture expressions and quirks that define their soul. I use high-fired stoneware, ensuring that even the most whimsical ashtray or incense holder is chip-resistant and durable enough for daily life.
If you are browsing for a unique gift, consider that each piece comes from a small batch. Because I fire these in my studio kiln, I cannot guarantee identical copies, but I can guarantee that no two are exactly alike. Whether you are picking a gift for a friend or looking for a centerpiece for your own desk, know that you are bringing home a small, solid piece of slow-living therapy.
The Janbo
I am Madhumita, and The Janbo is where I channel my travel stories into clay. These quirky sculptures and games are how I keep the fun in functional art, making sure your home feels a little less ordinary and a lot more like you.
