Tabla Performances for Fusion & Live Events
Whether it’s a fusion set or a collaborative concert, I bring the traditional Punjab Gharana rhythm to modern stages. Here is a look at some of my recent live performances and musical dialogues.
A behind the scenes look at a shoot in a professional studio. Working with a full band including keyboards and drums is always an exciting experience. Stay tuned for what's coming.
With my dearest brother Armaan Khan. We often collaborate on projects that blend classical sensibilities with modern sounds.
An unforgettable evening in Goa with some insanely talented musicians. This was for the 'Malhar & the Sea' festival.
Another moment from our performance at 'Malhar & the Sea' in Goa. The stage was set against a beautiful backdrop of the sea.
Sharing a moment with Sanjoy da, a brilliant musician, during our time in Goa for the festival.
The full group of artists I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with in Goa. The camaraderie off-stage is just as important as the chemistry on-stage.
Had an amazing show today at Spoken Fest in Mumbai with Snehdeep Singh and Ameya Paranjpe. It was a wonderful fusion of poetry, Sufi music, and ghazal.
With the talented Ameya Paranjpe at Spoken Fest. Collaborating with artists from different genres is always a learning experience.
The trio from Spoken Fest. Snehdeep's vocals, Ameya's accompaniment, and my tabla created a unique sound for the audience.
A happy birthday wish for the one and only Varsha Singh Dhanoa, pictured here with our band.
About Live Shows & Modern Collaborations
When I perform with a band or fusion group, the technical setup is just as important as the music. I always arrive at least an hour before the show to ensure my tabla cuts through the mix, balancing the natural acoustic resonance with your electronic sound system so the audience hears every detail of the bols (rhythmic syllables).
My roots are firmly in the Punjab Gharana, but I truly enjoy the dialogue that happens when tabla meets other instruments. Whether it is a ghazal night with a vocalist, a fusion stage like Spoken Fest, or a collaborative concert, my approach remains the same—listening intently to the lead artist and adding rhythmic depth without overpowering the melody.
My Approach to Live Performance
- Adaptability: I modify my playing style to match the energy of the event. For fusion sets, I use a more up-tempo, groove-oriented approach that gels with guitars and keyboards. For ghazal or semi-classical performances, I focus on the subtle nuances of sangat (accompaniment).
- Collaboration: I have had the pleasure of performing with artists like Varsha Singh Dhanoa and Snehdeep Singh at venues ranging from intimate setups to larger stages like those at the 'Malhar & the Sea' festival. These collaborations have taught me how to support a vocalist's journey through rhythm.
- Professional Standards: I prioritize stage presence and decorum. I typically wear traditional Indian attire—Kurta-Pajama with a turban—to respect the classical roots of the instrument, even when playing modern fusion pieces.
Logistics & Requirements
If you are planning to book me for an event, here is what you can expect:
- Sound Engineering: I provide specific guidance on mic placement (usually 2 microphones on short stands) to capture the true sound of the tabla.
- Collaboration: I am comfortable jamming with DJs, bands, or individual instrumentalists. If you have a setlist, let's discuss the rhythm requirements beforehand so I can prepare the appropriate thekas (rhythmic cycles).
- Travel: I am based in Mumbai and Delhi but travel frequently across India for concerts and corporate events. Please reach out with your event location and date so we can plan the logistics.
Surjeet Singh
I’m Surjeet. For me, the stage is a space for musical dialogue—whether I’m playing with a vocalist or jamming with a band. My tabla is my voice, and I bring the same sincerity to a large festival stage that I do to my daily riyaaz.
