Tabla Performances by Surjeet Singh
An 'ek koshish' to share the rhythm of the Punjab Gharana. From intimate solo recitals to spiritual Gurbani Kirtan, I invite you to experience the tabla in its most authentic form.
A traditional Chakradar in Teentaal, a composition of my Dada Guru, Ustad Allarakha Khan Sahab. Playing on this rooftop, with the city stretching out below, felt like sending the timeless rhythms of the Punjab Gharana out into the world.
A moment of pure joy from the Virasat Sangeet Mahotsav. Performing a jugalbandi with a sitar player is like a conversation where we complete each other's sentences through music.
A blessed haazri at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. For me, playing Gurbani Kirtan is not a performance but a prayer. The rhythm of the tabla connects me to the divine, and I feel humbled to be a part of this sacred tradition.
The energy on stage during a live concert is everything. Here, I am presenting a beautiful composition from my Guru, feeling the rhythm and the blessings of the audience with every beat.
I am deeply honored and humbled to receive the Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship Award. I dedicate this to my parents and my Guru, Ustad Joginder Singh Ji. It is their blessings and your support that make this journey possible.
Performing at the 'Malhar & the Sea' festival in Goa with some incredibly talented musicians. This is a glimpse of a live fusion performance where classical Indian sounds meet contemporary arrangements.
Surrounded by nature, I tried a humble presentation of a traditional Qaida in Jhaptaal. There is a unique peace in playing outdoors, where the taal of the tabla feels connected to the rhythm of the earth.
A candid moment captured during the 'Barish Season 2' concert. The connection with the audience and fellow artists on stage is a feeling I cherish.
About Featured
For any performance, I personally arrive 45-60 minutes before the event for sound checks and tuning. Whether you are hosting a formal classical baithak or a lively fusion event, my focus remains on the clarity of the bols and the resonance of the drums, ensuring the sound cuts through clearly for every guest in the room.
The Rhythm of the Punjab Gharana
My approach to the tabla is rooted in the powerful yet graceful style of the Punjab Gharana. This cluster showcases the range of my work, from the mathematical precision of a traditional Chakradar in Teentaal to the soulful improvisations required in Jugalbandi or Ghazal accompaniment.
My Performance Philosophy
Music, for me, is a form of service. Whether it is performing at the Virasat Sangeet Mahotsav or offering a devotional haazri at a Gurdwara, the intent is to connect with the audience through rhythm.
- Solo Recitals: I explore the traditional arc of a performance, moving from Peshkar to Qaida and Rela, often explaining the technical nuances to the audience as I go.
- Collaborations: I frequently work with vocalists, sitar players, and fusion bands. The dialogue between instruments is where the magic happens.
- Devotional & Spiritual: Playing for Kirtan or bhajans is a different kind of energy, where the tabla acts as a meditative heartbeat.
Planning Your Event
I am based in Mumbai and Delhi but travel across India for concerts and festivals. If you are planning an event, consider the nature of your space. A solo recital works best in a quiet, acoustic-friendly environment, while fusion setups require professional sound engineering to ensure the percussions blend perfectly with modern instruments. I am always happy to discuss the scale of your event and how we can bring the right rhythm to your stage.
Surjeet Singh
For me, tabla is not just music; it is a spiritual journey. I am a student of the Punjab Gharana, trying to speak the language of bols with sincerity and stay original in a world full of filters.
