Restoring a 200-year-old home requires a delicate balance between preserving historical integrity and integrating modern life. We transformed this narrow 10ft x 80ft space in the Sanskrit village of Mattur into a functional sanctuary while honoring its traditional Malnad roots.

This image captures the essence of the restored Mattur residence. The traditional wooden staircase, stone-clad column, and collection of terracotta pots create a space that is rich in texture and history.

A timeless tribute to heritage. This view highlights the restored waffle slab ceiling and earthy floors, reflecting the architectural wisdom of the Malnad region and blending tradition with modern living.

A view from the doorway into the heart of the home. The play of shadow and light reveals the central courtyard with its traditional swing, creating a sense of depth and tranquility.

This video teaser provides a glimpse into the timeless elegance of the Mattur Residence, showcasing the serene landscape and the home's traditional details, where every corner tells a story.

About Heritage Restored: The Mattur Residence

The primary challenge was the restrictive 10ft by 80ft footprint. Instead of removing structural walls, we retained the original waffle slab ceiling but introduced strategic light cutouts. This decision allowed natural light to travel through the length of the house, effectively transforming a once-dark interior into a bright, ventilated corridor.

Our approach to the Mattur residence was grounded in the principle that restoration is an architectural conversation with the past. The Malnad region is known for its specific vernacular architecture, and we focused on respecting that lineage while adapting the home for contemporary living.

Preserving Vernacular Wisdom

The structure relied on a traditional waffle slab ceiling, which provides both thermal mass and visual texture. We chose to expose and restore this element rather than conceal it with a false ceiling. By keeping the floor plan intact, we maintained the rhythm of the original space while updating the utility.

Materiality and Light

We focused on tactile, honest materials—specifically terracotta and locally sourced stone—to ground the renovation in its location. These materials offer a thermal stability that modern concrete alternatives often lack. To address the narrow site, we prioritized natural ventilation and light wells. This creates a fluid movement of air and shadow throughout the day, turning the home into a living, breathing environment. Heritage conservation is not just about keeping a structure standing; it is about ensuring the building remains relevant to the way people live today, blending regional identity with modern efficiency.
