Project Prangan: Reviving an Ancestral Soul
A complete transformation of a family home, blending the nostalgic charm of traditional Indian architecture with the functional needs of modern living.
This film tells the story of Prangan, a grand ancestral home where we blended history, heritage, and design. From the unconventional steel-blue main door to the majestic courtyard and bespoke furniture, every detail speaks of the lives lived within these walls.
The storytelling of this home starts right at the main door. The view opens into the foyer and leads to the most impactful space: the courtyard, where the mesmerizing, life-size marble sculpture of Lord Shiva and his family offers a breathtaking welcome.
With a modest elevation, we wanted the main door to be an eye-catching feature. We conceptualized a traditional carved teak door but chose to polish it in a gorgeous steel blue that stands out, telling a story of being traditional yet unconventional.
Behind the courtyard is the living room, a modest yet elegant space featuring the quintessential Indian swing. All-teak furniture provides warmth, a patterned fabric on the sofa adds ethnic appeal, and the coffered ceiling brings the space together into a cozy haven.
The dining space is where the family gets together. The stone-top table features massive, custom-made pillar legs that do justice to the scale of the home. Hand-painted pendants and a vintage crockery cabinet complete the traditional, hand-crafted feel.
The layout gifted us a grand staircase, which we turned into a visual masterpiece. We used blue balusters to match the main door, contrasted with a rich teak handrail. The adjacent wall is lined with teak and embedded mirrors, creating a truly regal look.
The master bedroom is a perfect harmony of patterns, colors, and textures. A fresh patterned green flooring sets the mood, beautifully complementing the rich teak furniture, including a colossal four-poster bed designed to match the client's grand personality.
The grandparents' room is an ethnic retreat where patterns galore. A fabric panel with a deep red and blue Indian motif makes a statement behind the headboard, while custom cement tiles with red motifs tie the whole look together beautifully.
This bedroom is absolutely delicate. A soft and subtle palette of white and wood lends a cozy vibe. We added just a hint of color in the custom cement tiled flooring and repeated the same blush tone in the furnishings for a simple and elegant space.
For the large office space, we shifted to a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic. Exotic black and white marble flooring in an overlapping pattern and plush, modern furniture create an elegance befitting the many different people this space would host.
About Project Prangan: Reviving an Ancestral Soul
Renovating ancestral properties requires balancing family sentiment with structural integrity. For Prangan, we kept the home's original footprint but reimagined the material palette, replacing worn surfaces with durable local stones like black Kadappa and bright Jaisalmer sandstone. This combination brings authentic warmth to the interiors while ensuring the house stays cool and easy to maintain throughout the year.
When we first visited this home in Proddatur, we knew the goal was to keep the soul of the house intact while updating it for today. We started by studying the flow of light and air. The courtyard became the heart of the home, where we placed a statue of Lord Shiva to anchor the space.
We traveled to Kochi to source furniture, finding an antique crockery cabinet gathering dust that we restored to serve as a dining highlight. For the staircase, we used deep blue balusters that match the main entrance door, adding a splash of unconventional color against the rich teak wood. In the master bedroom, we divided the large area using vintage pillars to create both a sleeping and a lounge zone. The kitchen follows a clean wood and white theme, proving that traditional homes can handle modern lines without losing their heritage character. We managed the entire process, from redoing the flooring to coordinating with local craftsmen, ensuring every carved detail was preserved or recreated with precision.
Key design elements include:
- Traditional Indian flooring using Athangudi patterns and Jaisalmer stone.
- Refurbished antique furniture pieces.
- Custom joinery with BWP plywood and natural wood veneers.
- Architectural lighting designed to highlight traditional ceiling details.
