Meet Ritu Kaul: The Visionary Behind Walnut
I am Ritu Kaul. Designing a space is never just about aesthetics; it is about translating your life, memories, and emotions into the rooms you call home.
Meet the heart and soul behind Walnut. I believe that interiors should be more than just design; they should speak to you, hold your memories, and bring joy and comfort into your life. This is the philosophy that drives every project we undertake.
For me, evolution is the way to survive. When I was thinking of a brand name, it took me back to my roots in Kashmir, and that's how Walnut was conceived. Every project we design is a testament to our core values of craftsmanship and timelessness.
With a background in interior architecture and furniture design, I have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible. My journey with Walnut has been about creating extraordinary homes that reflect artisanal Indian crafts, creativity, and positive energy.
As a strong female lead in the design world, my motto is "Art. Emotion. Space." I believe in designing with intention, creating spaces that speak and furniture that feels personal.
My journey as a designer began in 2000, and in 2009, I started Walnut, a name that came naturally from my motherland, Kashmir. Every design comes straight from the heart, and my greatest joy is seeing the smile on a client's face.
Reconnecting with a past client at one of our design shows. The journey of a designer is marked by these wonderful relationships built on trust and a shared love for beautiful spaces.
Looking back at 15 years of my journey, I've learned the importance of experimentation, knowing your worth, and staying true to your values. The happiness in a client's eyes when they enter their new home gives me joy beyond words.
The design process for our Dubai project started with a vision to create a modern, classy, and neutral yet rich material palette. This image captures the beginning of that creative exploration.
As a community of designers and creators, I believe we need to be more sensitive towards reducing waste. This video shares my thoughts on upcycling leftover materials from our sites and factories into beautiful, creative pieces.
About Meet Ritu Kaul: The Visionary
When I design, I am obsessed with the details most people overlook—the exact thickness of an edge, the proportions of a shelf, and how light hits a wall. My work is not just about aesthetics; it is about ensuring that every piece of furniture we build in our factory and every layout we plan in your home feels personal, functional, and deeply rooted in the story you want to live.
My journey began in 2000, and by 2009, I founded Walnut to create something meaningful. The name is a tribute to my roots in Kashmir, and that connection to heritage drives how I work today. I do not believe in copy-paste designs. Every project I take on, whether it is a luxury farmhouse or a compact city apartment, starts with a blank slate and your specific lifestyle.
The Walnut Process
I am not the type of architect who sits in an office sending emails. I am on-site, in our factory, and walking through your space with you. We start with deep observation—understanding how you move, what you value, and how you want your home to feel. My team and I handle everything from the initial space planning to the final art placement.
Why Details Matter
We own our manufacturing facility for a reason. It allows me to control the quality of every bespoke furniture piece. When we decide on the thickness of a veneer or the joinery of a wardrobe, I am thinking about how that piece will age and how it will hold your memories over the next decade.
Designing With Intention
Whether we are integrating traditional Indian crafts like Dhokra into a contemporary living room or planning a serene bedroom retreat, the goal is always the same: to create a space that breathes. My clients often come to me because they want a home that feels like an extension of their personality. If you are looking for an architect who values the process as much as the result, let’s talk.
Walnut by Ritu Kaul
I’m Ritu, and Walnut is my way of bringing the warmth of my Kashmiri roots into your daily life. I believe that if a space does not make you feel something, it is not finished. I am here to build your sanctuary, not just another interior project.
