Malavikaagnimitram: A Grand Puppet and Dance Production
Kalidasa’s timeless love story, reimagined through the synergy of traditional string puppetry and classical Bharatanatyam. A visually rich theatrical experience for your venue.
This is the official announcement for our performance of "Malavikaagnimitram" at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. It is always an honor to bring the work of Mahakavi Kalidasa to such esteemed venues.
A key element of this production is the seamless interaction between live dancers and puppets. Here, a dancer performs alongside the puppet stage, creating a dynamic narrative that bridges two artistic worlds.
The stage is set to create a world of royalty and romance. This wide shot shows a live dancer in motion, with the puppet characters providing context and depth from their own stage, a technique we use to create a multi-dimensional performance.
A close-up of the interaction between a live dancer and the royal court puppets. This unique blend of puppetry and classical dance is a hallmark of our interpretation of "Malavikaagnimitram."
Another view of the synergy between the dancer and the puppets, showcasing a moment of reverence and storytelling within the play.
The performance captures the subtle emotions of the characters, both human and puppet. This scene highlights the expressive potential of combining live dance with the intricate movements of string puppetry.
A moment of drama unfolds on stage, with the dancer's expression mirroring the narrative being enacted by the puppets.
We use special effects like theatrical fog to create an ethereal and dramatic atmosphere. This scene shows a veiled puppet, adding a layer of mystery and beauty to the production.
A similar atmospheric shot, where lighting and fog transform the stage into a dreamlike space, enhancing the poetic quality of Kalidasa's play.
The use of colored lighting, here a deep purple, helps to set the mood for different scenes. Two puppets are seen in a quiet, intimate moment amidst the dramatic fog.
About Grand Productions: Malavikaagnimitram
Bringing Malavikaagnimitram to your venue is a significant production involving 6-10 artists, including Bharatanatyam dancers and puppeteers. Because we rely on atmospheric lighting and synchronized sound cues, we require a clear 4-6 hour window before the performance to set up our proscenium stage and complete our technical checks.
A Convergence of Two Traditions
Malavikaagnimitram is not merely a puppet show; it is an exploration of how ancient art forms can converse. We take the Sanskrit classic by Mahakavi Kalidasa and layer it with the precision of Bharatanatyam. On stage, you will see a dialogue between the dancer—representing the human emotion—and the string puppets—representing the timeless nature of the epic narrative.
The Production Elements
This is a full-scale theatrical performance. When we travel for this production, we bring:
- The Ensemble: A team of 6-10 performers, including professional dancers and puppeteers.
- The Scenography: Multi-layered, hand-painted backdrops designed to change with the narrative, mimicking the architecture of the period.
- Atmospherics: We utilize stage lighting and dry ice fog machines to create an ethereal, dreamlike quality essential for the storytelling style of the era.
Why Choose This Production?
Our goal is to keep these stories alive for the next generation. Whether you are hosting a cultural festival, a university event, or an institutional celebration, this production offers more than entertainment. It provides a window into the depth of Indian literature and the technical mastery of Dakshina Bharata puppetry. It is a spectacle that engages the audience, asking them to look closer at the connection between the dance and the strings.
