Meet Shahen Mistry: The Architect Behind Mumbai’s Iconic Spaces
Architecture is about more than just blueprints for me—it is about creating an experience that feels like you. Here is a look at my hands-on approach and the person behind the drafting table.
A black and white portrait. I believe a smile and a positive attitude are just as important in design as a sharp pencil.
A relaxed moment at one of my project sites. My goal is to create spaces where people feel comfortable and happy, and I think that starts with the designer's own approach.
Taking a moment in a recently completed space. Seeing a project come together, with art on the walls and furniture in place, is the most rewarding part of my job.
This graphic is for my "Spaces & Stories" YouTube series, where I give personal tours of my projects, like the Kutar Residence. I love sharing the stories and details that make each home unique.
Here I am, surrounded by artwork choices for a project. I believe curating the right art is like casting the final character in the story of a home. It’s a process of making choices that bring a space to life.
A fun action figure illustration of me! It comes equipped with blueprints and bold ideas, which is a pretty accurate description of my daily life.
Another version of my architect action figure. It’s a playful reminder that while my work is serious, it’s also important to have fun and stay creative.
About Meet the Architect
You will not find me just handing over a PDF of drawings and walking away. My process is deeply hands-on, from the first site visit to the quarry trips where we pick the exact stone for your flooring. I am there to ensure the vision we sketched matches the reality on site, treating every project as a genuine partnership from start to finish.
My Design Philosophy
For me, architecture is not just about building spaces, it is about creating an experience. Whether I am working on a 2,400 sq ft home in Parel or a heritage commercial venue like the Parsi Dairy Farm, my goal remains the same: to create a space that feels lived in, not just staged.
The Human Side of Design
I believe a well-designed home should tell your story as much as it reflects my design principles. You will often see me sketching, choosing materials, or getting my hands dirty on site. I run a 'Spaces & Stories' series on YouTube because I want my clients to understand the 'why' behind the choices we make. It is never just about paint and tiles; it is about how the light hits a wall, where we hide the storage to keep a room clean, and how we integrate traditional values like a mandir into a modern layout.
How We Work Together
When we start a project, it is a conversation. I do not come in with a rigid ego. If you have an heirloom chair you love or a collection of books that needs a home, we build around that. My team and I focus on:
- Smart Design: Using concealed storage and multifunctional furniture to make every square foot count, especially in a city like Mumbai.
- Timeless Aesthetics: I prefer styles that age well rather than chasing fleeting trends.
- Clear Communication: I use renders to show you the end result before we break ground, so there are no surprises.
