Master Planning for Hillside Developments & Terrain Integration

Designing for hilly landscapes requires a shift in perspective. We focus on natural contours, drainage patterns, and sunlight, ensuring our master plans work with the land rather than against it.

A glimpse into the Riverside Retreat in Kotagiri, a 70-acre hillside development. The design philosophy was driven by simplicity and practicality, using the site's natural slope to frame breathtaking valley views from every home.

The entrance to FINCH eco-farms, designed to look as if it grew from the hill itself. The gate is framed by earthen bunds covered in native plants, creating an organic transition from the road to the property.

Looking out from the FINCH entrance, the design reveals a winding road that follows the land's natural contours. The organic steel structure above is designed for creepers to form a living archway.

About this collection

Before we place a single structure, we perform a detailed hydro-contour analysis of your site. This study of slope variances allows us to optimize plot placement with minimal cut-and-fill, saving you on excavation costs while ensuring that every home in your layout captures the best valley views.

Working With the Land, Not Against It

When we develop hilly terrain, our primary objective is to maintain the landscape's integrity. We avoid the rigid, cookie-cutter grids that are common in urban planning, preferring instead to lay out organic road networks that follow the natural flow of the hill. This approach reduces soil erosion and creates a more intimate, village-like atmosphere.

Infrastructure & Hardscapes

Our site strategy goes beyond basic zoning. We integrate essential infrastructure as aesthetic features. For instance, we design drainage swales and organic ponds to manage water runoff naturally. To stabilize slopes without relying heavily on concrete, we use stone-pitched earthen bunds. These structures, known as revetment, stabilize the terrain while creating usable pockets for native landscaping.

Creating Human-Centric Communities

Beyond the technical layout, we consider how people actually move through these spaces. We prioritize pedestrian avenues and jogging tracks that encourage a connection with the outdoors. By incorporating pocket parks and seating alcoves along these trails, we ensure that communal life is woven into the geography of the site. Whether it is a boutique retreat in the Nilgiris or a larger hillside plotted development, our goal is to create a space that feels like it grew from the land itself.

We believe a building should feel like an extension of the earth, not an imposition on it. My team and I focus on creating master plans that honor the topography, blending your vision with the natural landscape to build something truly lasting.
