Building on Challenging Terrains and Hillside Landscapes
Building in the mountains is not about overpowering the land, but respecting the slope and the soil beneath it. Our process turns difficult terrains into stable, harmonious foundations.
Overlooking the dramatic landscape from the roof of our Vagamon resort project during construction. This image embodies my commitment to being on-site, making critical design decisions that honor the spirit and scale of the location.
The construction site at Vagamon, showing raw materials stockpiled against a backdrop of rolling hills and a dramatic sky. This view illustrates the initial stages of transforming a challenging, sloped site into a thoughtfully designed recreational resort.
A craftsman builds a retaining wall using stone excavated directly from the project site. This practice of using local materials is central to my philosophy, ensuring the built structure is literally and figuratively grounded in its environment.
This video documents the construction process at our Vagamon site. It provides a glimpse into the complexities of building on a mountain, from laying the foundation against a stunning valley view to pouring concrete for structures that will soon offer guests an unparalleled experience.
About Site Stories: Building in Challenging Terrains
We do not flatten the land just to fit a foundation. Instead, we adapt our designs to the natural slope of your site. In our recent Vagamon project, we retained stone directly from the excavation to build structural walls, ensuring that the architecture remains grounded in its specific environment rather than fighting against it.
When dealing with sloped sites, the primary goal is stability and integration. Our approach to terrain-responsive architecture begins with a rigorous topographical analysis. We look for buildable pockets and conservation zones, minimizing earth cutting to maintain the natural drainage patterns of the land.
Our Process
- Site Analysis: We map sun paths and natural water runoff before we put a single line on paper.
- Circulation Design: On steep slopes, accessibility is key. We plan pathways and tiers to make navigation intuitive.
- Material Integrity: We prefer local stone and native materials, as seen in our Vagamon resort project. This not only grounds the structure visually but often reduces transportation costs.
Hillside Construction Challenges
Building on a hill requires specific technical considerations. We prioritize deep foundations and retaining walls that work with gravity, not against it. Whether it is a private villa or a resort, we ensure that the finished structure maximizes the valley views while providing shelter from the elements. Our master planning focuses on orientation, ensuring natural ventilation and light, which is crucial for comfort in high-altitude or uneven terrains.
