Designing Sustainable Public Community Spaces
Public spaces should serve the people who use them every day. We designed this seaside park in Bandra by focusing on real community needs, drainage engineering, and durable safety standards for children.
A short video showing the park's play equipment in use. We selected durable and engaging structures, including slides, swings, and rockers, to create a dynamic and safe environment for children.
A wide view of the park on its opening day, filled with local residents. The design focused on providing an open, green lawn area for unstructured play and community gathering, set against the backdrop of the sea.
Families enjoying the new green space at the Bandstand park. Our goal was to create a setting that encourages community interaction and provides a safe, pleasant environment for parents and children.
Children and parents playing together on the lush lawn. The success of a public space is measured by its use, and the immediate, joyful adoption of this park by the community is a testament to the project's impact.

About Creating Community Spaces: The Bandstand Park
People see a green lawn, but we see the engineering underneath. Creating a sustainable public space in Mumbai requires careful drainage management to prevent flooding and durable safety flooring that holds up under constant use. We focus on these practical details so the park remains safe and usable for children all year round, not just on opening day.
How We Approach Community Spaces
Designing a public park is rarely just about planting a few trees. It is about understanding the movement patterns of the neighborhood and creating a space that resists the wear and tear of a city like Mumbai. For the Bandstand project, we collaborated closely with local ALMs and representatives to ensure the design addressed specific local concerns.
The Engineering Behind the Lawn
We prioritize longevity in our public designs. This means specifying materials that withstand coastal humidity and high foot traffic.
- Safety Flooring: We use EPDM or rubber granule flooring that meets fall-height safety standards, which is non-negotiable when designing for children.
- Drainage Logic: We incorporate sub-soil drainage layers to manage storm water, ensuring the park does not become unusable during the monsoon.
- Native Planting: We select coastal-friendly species that thrive with minimal maintenance and water, reducing the long-term burden on the community.
Tactical Urbanism
We advocate for tactical urbanism. We do not wait for massive budgets to make an impact. We test, tweak, and scale up smart changes. Whether it is a small park by the sea or re-aligning traffic at a busy transit hub, we believe that iterative design allows us to create functional, responsive spaces that solve problems for the people who actually inhabit them.
