Additional Work & Design Explorations
We test architectural limits through temporary pavilions and installations. These projects are our way of experimenting with new materials and public engagement strategies in Mumbai.
The BMW Guggenheim Lab, a temporary public pavilion we designed in Mumbai. This structure, built with a diagrid roof of bamboo, served as a hub for workshops and public talks, demonstrating our interest in sustainable materials and community-focused architecture.
About Additional Work & Design Explorations
When we designed the BMW Guggenheim Lab, we were not just building a structure; we were testing the structural possibilities of bamboo in an urban setting. Using a diagrid roof allowed us to create a vast, open space without the need for heavy, permanent foundations. It is a practical example of how sustainable, temporary architecture can effectively facilitate community dialogue and public programming without leaving a permanent footprint on the site.
Architecture is often viewed through the lens of permanency, but we believe temporary interventions hold immense value for city life. By focusing on rapid assembly, material efficiency, and site-specificity, we explore how design can respond to immediate community needs.
The use of bamboo for the Guggenheim Lab was not just a stylistic choice; it was a technical decision to prioritize sustainability and ease of dismantling. This approach allows us to deploy structures in sensitive urban environments, whether for an exhibition, a pop-up pavilion, or a community workshop space, where traditional brick-and-mortar construction is not feasible or desirable.
We apply this approach to every exploration. Before we break ground on any structure, we analyze the movement patterns, the material logistics, and the specific regulatory environment of the site. Whether it is integrating a pavilion into a heritage precinct or setting up a temporary hub in a high-traffic area, our goal remains the same: creating functional, thoughtful spaces that challenge the status quo of urban design.
If you are looking for design solutions that push the boundaries of conventional architecture, our team is ready to collaborate on your next vision.
