Once a neglected dumping ground, this urban amphitheater is now a vibrant gathering point. We reclaimed this space to prove that community-led design can breathe new life into Mumbai’s streets.

Community members and children participate in painting a mural at The Steps. We believe in a hands-on, community-led approach, where locals are directly involved in shaping their own public spaces.

About The Steps, Bandra: From Dump to Community Hub

When we transformed this 30-year-old dumping ground into The Steps, our biggest challenge was universal access. We did not want a separate, hidden entrance, so we integrated 1:12 slope ramps directly into the seating steps themselves. This allows wheelchair users, parents with prams, and cyclists to move through the space seamlessly alongside everyone else, making the amphitheater truly inclusive.

Urban design is often treated as a top-down mandate, but we believe in starting from the ground up. The transformation of The Steps was not just about clearing trash; it was about understanding the neighborhood fabric and the people who walk these streets daily. We focused on tactical urbanism, testing concepts with temporary furniture and paint before committing to permanent structures.

Materiality and Function

We selected durable, locally sourced materials to ensure the space could withstand Mumbai’s heavy monsoon seasons. The steps feature rough-cut Basalt and Shahabad stone, chosen for their anti-skid properties and earthy aesthetic. Lighting was a crucial component; we designed warm, ambient step lighting that enhances safety post-sunset without creating harsh glare, inviting people to stay and socialize long after the sun goes down.

Community-Led Activation

Public art was central to giving this space its identity. We collaborated with local artists to create murals that reflect the 'swag' of Mumbai, rather than using generic decorations. By organizing events and inviting locals to participate in painting workshops, we ensured the community felt a sense of ownership. This isn't just a staircase; it is a landmark where street performers, joggers, and families coexist.

Our Approach to Public Spaces

  • Universal Design: Integrating ramps into the architectural form rather than adding them as an afterthought.
  • Sustainability: Biophilic integration using native plant species to reduce urban heat.
  • Social Infrastructure: Creating seating that doubles as an amphitheater to facilitate events and connection.

We don't believe in fencing off public land. Our goal is to reclaim streets and parking lots, turning them into green, accessible, and art-filled spaces that bring people together.
