Academic Art Studies & Life Drawing

Real art starts with discipline, not just inspiration. My training at Sir J.J. School of Art taught me that the foundation is everything. Here is where I break down the human form, study anatomy, and keep my daily practice honest.

A life drawing session at J.J. School of Art, showing my large-scale graphite drawing next to the model. This is the foundation of understanding human anatomy.

A closer view of the finished graphite life drawing. The focus here is on accurate proportions, shading, and capturing the structure of the human form.

A video montage of my "Drawing from life" sessions. This is the daily 'riyaz' or practice that hones an artist's skills.

A graphite portrait sketch from my sketchbook, done during a studio session. These quick studies are crucial for capturing likeness and expression.

Another graphite portrait sketch, focusing on capturing the unique features and character of the model's face.

A gesture sketch in graphite titled "आरामखुर्ची" (Armchair), capturing the relaxed posture of the model.

A nude study of a female figure done in watercolours. This medium allows for a softer, more fluid approach to painting the human form.

Another watercolour nude study from a studio practice session, exploring form and skin tones with a limited palette.

A watercolour portrait study of a live model. The transparency of the medium is used here to build up layers of skin tone.

An oil on canvas study from a classwork session. The monochrome approach helps in understanding light, shadow, and form without the complexity of colour.

About Academic Studies: The Foundation of My Craft

Many people see the finished portraits, but these life studies are where I actually solve problems. When you hire me for a portrait, you aren't just paying for paint on canvas; you're paying for the hundreds of hours I have spent studying anatomy, light, and shadow. It is this daily 'riyaz' (practice) that ensures when I pick up the brush for your commission, the proportions and structure are already second nature.

My approach is rooted in the academic rigour of the Sir J.J. School of Art. Whether I am working with graphite for a quick study or watercolours for a more fluid figure composition, the goal remains the same: capturing the truth of the subject. In this collection, you can see everything from quick gesture sketches to full-length studies. I believe that an artist who stops practising these fundamentals loses their edge.

If you are in Mumbai and looking for a commissioned piece, knowing the foundation of my process helps. I do not just trace photographs. I understand how the bone structure sits beneath the skin and how light hits a surface. This allows me to create portraits that feel alive rather than static. From my 'आरामखुर्ची' (armchair) sketches to my monochrome oil studies, this is an honest, unedited look at the work that happens before the final masterpiece is delivered.

I am Sanket, an artist formed by the rigorous discipline of the Sir J.J. School of Art. I do not believe in taking shortcuts with anatomy or composition, which is why these studies are the backbone of every commission I take. If you value technical skill and a deep understanding of the human form, I am the right artist for your project.
