My Journey with Sand Art
For me, sand is not just a tool. It is a connection to nature and the earth, where every grain represents a story waiting to be told.
Here I am on the beach at sunset, with the very material that I use to tell my stories. For me, sand is not just a medium, it is a connection to nature and the earth.
About The Artist & The Medium
I personally source and prepare the sand for every performance. I use double-sieved river sand that is dust-reduced to ensure the fine texture required for smooth, fluid visual transitions. This practice keeps my shows eco-friendly and grounded in the materials I love.
My journey with sand started in art school, but it became my primary medium when I realised how much this simple, natural element could convey. Sand is honest. It does not hide anything. When I draw on the lightbox, the image appears, tells its story, and then fades away. It is a performance that exists only in the present moment.
This aligns with my belief in sustainability, or eco-art. I avoid synthetic materials, sticking instead to what the earth provides, treated with care. Whether I am performing at a summit in Bangalore or a global stage like the G-20, the process remains the same. I prepare my own sand, calibrate the overhead camera rig, and sync the visuals to music to create what I call a Sand Melody.
Each performance is a mix of technical precision and artistic intuition. Some ask me if it is difficult to work with a medium that disappears so quickly. I see it as a strength. By not creating a permanent physical object, I do not add to waste. I create a memory, a story that the audience holds onto long after the show. This is the essence of my work—connecting people through a medium that has been under our feet all along.
