About Behind the Scenes
People often ask how we get those perfect drips or flying sauce shots in our commercial work. It involves real teamwork between the photographer, food stylist, and lighting assistant to coordinate the timing. We shoot tethered to a laptop so the client sees the results in real time, ensuring we hit that yumm factor before the food loses its freshness.
A commercial campaign shoot is rarely a solo act. When I am on set for a brand like Veeba, the process relies on precise planning and constant communication. We start with a mood board to define the lighting style and composition. Once the lights are set, we move to the staging area where the food stylist places each ingredient.
My role involves managing the camera settings while directing the lighting assistant to ensure the highlights catch the texture of the product. Here are a few technical realities of these shoots:
- Lighting: We use Broncolor or Profoto systems to freeze motion, which is essential for capturing liquids in mid-air or falling ingredients.
- Tethering: The laptop setup allows for immediate feedback. Clients can verify if the composition meets their brand guidelines before we move to the next shot.
- Crew Dynamics: A successful project depends on the synergy between the photographer and the stylist. We discuss the shot list, prepare props, and execute the plan with efficiency to stay within the daily schedule.
Every shoot teaches me something new, and while things get messy with sauces and splashes, that is part of the fun in creating high-quality advertising visuals.
