You do not need to be a writer to use words for healing. Here, we use simple journaling and poetry as tools to clear mental clutter, find your voice, and reconnect with your inner wisdom.

This was the setup for a journaling workshop I led for students at Northeastern University. Wellbeing shouldn't end with a designated awareness day. I encourage students to make writing a daily tool for cleansing, nourishing, and creating themselves. Journaling is like a compass, a map, and a companion for life's journey.

I started this '48 Weeks of Wonder' series to encourage consistent reflection through writing. Holding the book '365 Days of Wonder', I invite everyone to mull over a weekly precept. You don't know what 'aha' moment is waiting for you until you pick up a pen and let your thoughts flow onto the paper.

Boredom is the fertile soil where creativity sprouts. This painting and poem were the outcome of a quiet Sunday. I channeled my longing for the yellow Amaltas flowers of India into this simple creation. The process matters more than the outcome. I encourage you to stay with your boredom and see what you can create.

"Kindness, like a boomerang, always returns." This was a precept for my '48 Weeks of Wonder' journaling prompt. I encourage people to reflect in writing on experiences of kindness, both given and received. This simple act of writing and remembering can reconnect us to our own humanity and the goodness in the world.

"Life is not colorful. Life is coloring." This powerful precept reminds us that we are active participants in creating our own lives. Journaling is the act of coloring. It is about saying what you need to say without judging or policing yourself, adding your own unique shades to the canvas of your life.

"The best angle from which to approach any problem is the try-angle." I love this witty precept. It is a simple but profound reminder to move from thinking to doing. Writing about a problem is often the first step in trying, helping us see it from a new perspective and begin to take action.

"Normal is a setting on a washing machine." This quote always makes me smile. It's a prompt I use to encourage reflection on the "settings" we operate on in our own lives. Writing helps us question these settings and choose a way of being that is authentic to us, not just what is considered normal.

"Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken." This famous Oscar Wilde quote is the first precept in my '48 Weeks of Wonder' series. It's the foundation of all self discovery work. Through writing, we can begin to peel back the layers of who we think we should be and connect with who we truly are.

About The Journey Inward: Writing as Medicine

Writing here is not about grammar or literary style, it is about clearing the mental noise that keeps you stuck. We use prompts to bypass your inner critic, allowing you to get honest about what you are feeling without the pressure of having to make it sound perfect.
