About Sustainable Architecture Design

Why I Design the Way I Do

I started SAFE Design Studio because I couldn’t ignore how much our buildings impact the earth. For me, sustainable architecture isn’t just about ticking boxes or getting green ratings. I design homes and spaces that actually help the environment and the people inside them.

What Inspires My Work

Most of my ideas come from the building traditions of Northeast India. I spend a lot of time researching indigenous construction techniques, like the Assam type house that’s built to handle earthquakes. These local methods are vanishing, so I bring them back—sometimes with a twist—to fit today’s needs.

My Go-To Materials

  • Timber is my favourite—seriously, it locks away carbon and feels warm. I’ve even developed a hybrid timber construction system that skips the glue and uses upcycled wood from old buildings and tree bark waste.
  • Bamboo and stone aren’t just backup options. I use bamboo for cool, complex roofs and stone from the site itself, minimizing transport and waste.
  • Lime and mud plasters help tie the building to its place, and I love working with local artisans who know these materials inside out.

My Signature: Nature Inside

Every project is a chance to use biophilic design principles. I go for inward-facing layouts, big courtyards (the aangan), lots of sliding doors, green terraces and indoor plants. It’s about making a space that’s peaceful, filled with sunlight and fresh air—basically, a green sanctuary.

What You Get

A home or space that feels good to live in, works for you, and genuinely does less harm to the planet. No frills, just honest, eco-conscious home design.

My Story

Hey, we’re SAFE. Our roots run deep in Shillong, picking up tricks from the old 'Assam type' houses—those quake-ready beauties with bamboo and timber. We got curious, so we mixed local wisdom with new tech, even nerded out at TUDelft. Big fans of Revathi Kamath, too. For us, architecture means making spaces that hug you back—like an 'Aangan' courtyard, your own slice of nature. Cozy, earthy, and yeah, safe.

My Work

Sustainable architecture and interiors - We design homes, community spaces, and interiors that put nature first, blending old and new ideas.

Timber joinery without glue - We push for timber and bamboo buildings, using joinery that skips glue for a cleaner environment.

Local techniques meet modern science - We rework Northeast Indian methods, updating them for today with research and experimentation.

Upcycled timber facades and art - Old timber, tree skin—if it’s waste, we turn it into something beautiful for your space.

Collaborating with artisans - We team up with craftspeople, share our research, and build digital tools for a greener future.
