Project Deep Dive: The Aangan Courtyard House
Discover an inward-facing sanctuary designed to block out the noise and bring nature into the heart of your home.
A tour of the main living area, which features a double-height ceiling and a wall of folding glass doors. This design element allows the entire space to open onto a green terrace, seamlessly merging the indoor living area with the outdoors.
A view from the upper-level bridge, looking down into the double-height living room and out to the backyard. This perspective shows the vertical volume of the space and the extensive use of glass to maintain a constant connection with the landscape.
The exterior facade showcases the home's modern aesthetic, with clean lines and large glass panels. The reflection in the glass creates a beautiful symmetry with the surrounding greenery and the building's structure.
The master bedroom is designed as a peaceful retreat. It directly overlooks an internal courtyard, allowing residents to wake up with a view of nature while maintaining complete privacy. The use of warm wood flooring and a slatted wood ceiling adds to the cozy atmosphere.
A closer look at the master bedroom's connection to the courtyard. The large wooden-framed window acts as a living picture, with the changing light and weather creating a dynamic natural artwork.
This view from inside the master bedroom looks through the window across the courtyard. This layering of spaces creates a sense of depth and visual interest, a key strategy in biophilic interior design.
The upstairs lounge area is a colorful and comfortable reading nook overlooking the courtyard. This transitional space connects different parts of the home while providing a semi-private area for relaxation.
About this collection
We designed this home to sit above a noisy food processing unit, so we turned the structure inward. By organizing every room around private courtyards, we traded industrial noise for a quiet, light-filled garden space that connects you to nature from every corner.
The Aangan Courtyard House project explores the concept of inward-facing architecture to maintain privacy and tranquility in busy urban locations. Our approach uses the courtyard not just as a visual feature, but as a central environmental tool.
By utilizing stack ventilation and passive solar planning, we ensure the house remains cool and naturally lit throughout the day. We incorporated large glass walls and folding doors that open directly onto these green pockets, allowing the interior and exterior to blur. This creates a constant connection to the outdoors, even when you are inside.
For structural and aesthetic elements, we prioritized low-impact materials. We used local stone recovered directly from the site for wall textures, paired with river gravel and timber that avoids glue-based adhesives. These choices reduce the carbon footprint while providing a tactile, earthy finish. The layout is intentionally flexible, allowing residents to shift between spaces as the sunlight moves, making the home a dynamic, living part of their daily life. We believe this harmony between traditional Northeast Indian design wisdom and modern engineering is the path to a healthier, sustainable future.
