About Portraits: Capturing the Soul on Canvas

When you commission a portrait, my process begins with a one-hour consultation where we select the reference photograph and discuss the personality of the subject. I do not just paint what I see; I focus on the eyes and expressions to ensure the final piece feels alive. You will have full visibility throughout the journey, including digital layout approvals before I start painting, so you know exactly what to expect from the final artwork.

My approach to portraiture is rooted in the belief that a painting should be a 'vinamra chitra abhivadan' (humble artistic tribute). Whether you are looking for a realistic head-and-shoulders study on a 16x20 inch canvas or a larger statement piece, I use premium archival acrylics or oils on double-primed cotton or linen. Each portrait is finished with a UV varnish to ensure longevity, protecting the colors for years to come.

The Commission Process

I believe in transparency and collaboration. Every project follows a clear path:

  • Consultation: We start by finding the right reference, focusing on high-quality images where the subject's expression is clear.
  • Composition Approval: Before I put paint to canvas, we review the digital layout together. This ensures the composition meets your vision before the work begins.
  • Creation & Updates: I work with either heavy body acrylics or oils, employing realistic techniques to capture details. For larger or more complex projects, I provide periodic updates so you can see the progress.

Why Commission a Painted Portrait?

Unlike a photograph, a painting allows me to emphasize the soul of the subject. Whether it is a memorial portrait for a family member, a birthday gift, or a way to honor a public figure, a painting holds a different weight. I have painted everyone from legendary astronomers to beloved family elders, always treating the canvas with the same level of respect and attention to detail. Every piece I deliver includes a Certificate of Authenticity, documenting the materials used and the date of completion, so you can be confident in the provenance of your investment.

My art is a humble tribute to the culture and people who inspire me. I paint to preserve legacies, and for me, a portrait is the most personal way to honor someone special. When I sit at my easel, my only goal is to make sure the love you feel for the subject shines through on the canvas.
