Designing homes is a journey of trial, growth, and constant discovery. Here is a look at the stories, features, and moments that have shaped our 13-year path at Purple Backyard.

We were so thrilled to make it onto the D/List 2024 for the second year in a row. Holding our 'Joy' totem award, I feel immense gratitude for the recognition from the design community.

I'm so proud to share this feature from Scale Magazine, which beautifully captured my 13-year journey as a designer and founder. It's a story told with so much heart and authenticity.

A conversation with Livingetc India about my creative journey, which is rooted in Indian art, craftsmanship, and an endless love for design.

Another page from my feature in Livingetc, where I explain my design language. I see it as transitional, borrowing from different eras to create decluttered, organized spaces that feel both raw and refined.

The cover of our feature in Livingetc India. It's an honor to have our work and our design dialogue shared in such a thoughtful way.

Hello, AD Poland! We were so excited to see Kanso House featured in Architectural Digest Polska, described as a "minimalist sanctuary in the center of a busy metropolis."

A little note to myself, and to you. This journey is a beautiful mess of sprinting, sketching, and dreaming. It's a reminder that it's okay to pause, because the stillness is part of the story too.

About Recognition & Our Story

When we discuss design, we aren't just talking about aesthetics; we are talking about the years of iteration behind every curve. Our process is a constant cycle of sketching, prototyping, and starting over. It is messy and human. When you see our work in a magazine or an awards list, know that it represents thousands of hours of hand-carving and careful balancing, all to ensure your home feels lived-in, not just looked at.

Our story started in Mumbai with a simple belief: a home should be a sanctuary, not a showroom. Over the past 13 years, this philosophy has guided us as we grew from a small team into a studio that blends traditional Indian craft with modern living.

We define our style as 'transitional'—a blend of the raw and the refined. This means we might pair high-end Indian marble sourced from Rajasthan with simple, honest woodwork. We believe that true luxury is not about perfection, but about the story an object or a room tells. Whether we are designing a penthouse in Bengaluru or a minimalist apartment in Mumbai, our focus remains on creating spaces that allow you to pause.

Why Our Process Is Different

  • Deep Collaboration: We work directly with karigars (skilled craftspeople) who understand the soul of materials like basalt, marble, and teak. By involving them early, we ensure that every furniture piece and installation is built with longevity in mind.
  • The 'Beautiful Mess': Design is rarely linear. We embrace the chaos of the studio because that is where the most honest ideas come from. We do not mass-produce; we build for specific routines and specific lives.
  • Recognition and Dialogue: Being featured in publications like Architectural Digest Polska and Livingetc India is an honour, but it is not the goal. These features represent a dialogue with the broader design community—a chance to share our belief in Indian heritage, local craftsmanship, and the importance of stillness in a busy metropolis.

Our awards and features are reflections of the trust our clients place in us to shape their daily lives. We are here to help you build a home that is entirely yours.
