Newborn-Style Portraits for Rescued Animals
Every rescued animal has a story worth telling. I photograph shelter pets using gentle, newborn-style portraits to capture their innocence and help them find their forever homes.
For this series, the concept was to photograph rescued baby animals in the style of newborn portraits. This little goat kid, sleeping on a handmade cloud bed, shows the gentle and creative approach I take.
This adorable indie puppy, rescued by CARE, poses with a small crocheted doll for his newborn-style portrait.

A whole crew of kittens piles into and hangs from a decorative ring for a playful and acrobatic group shot.

About The CARE Shelter Animal Series
Shooting rescue animals is different from working with trained pets. We create a calm, slow-paced environment where these little ones feel safe enough to rest, whether they are a tiny kitten or a rescued puppy. It requires zero rushing and plenty of patience to get that perfect, peaceful portrait, ensuring the animal stays relaxed and comfortable throughout the process.
This series began with a simple idea: treat shelter animals with the same reverence and tenderness as human newborns. When you visit a shelter, it can be overwhelming, but a beautiful, high-quality portrait can stop someone in their tracks and help them see the individual behind the rescue tag.
Each session is designed with the animal's comfort as the priority. We use soft textures, muted backdrops, and gentle lighting to highlight their unique expressions. It is not just about cute photos; it is about empathy. When an indie puppy or a rescued kitten looks serene in a handmade bed or nestled in a soft sling, the viewer connects with them differently. They see a companion waiting for a home, not just a stray.
The technical approach involves careful handling and fear-free techniques. We do not force poses. Instead, we wait for those natural, quiet moments. Whether it is a puppy curled up with a toy or a kitten peeking out from festive decor, the goal is to make these animals look and feel cherished. These images have been used for charity calendars to raise funds and awareness, proving that when you show an animal with dignity, people take notice.
