Himalayan Dog Photography in Uttarakhand

I head to the mountains to find dogs in their element. From the proud Gaddi sheepdogs of Uttarakhand to the watchful Bhotiya pups, these shots are about respect, patience, and the wild beauty of working breeds.

Bhola, a magnificent Gaddi dog, posing in the Himalayan foothills. He was a natural model in the outdoor light, showcasing the proud heritage of India's working breeds.

This is me with a friendly companion I met while trekking in the mountains. My love for dogs and the outdoors is what drives my photography.

A perfectly timed action shot of Sonu the Gaddi dog catching a treat, while Sundari watches on. Capturing these working dogs at play shows a different side of their personality.

Another portrait of the handsome Bhola. These dogs have a powerful presence, and my goal is to capture their strength and gentle nature.

This is Sundari, a beautiful but wary Gaddi dog. Earning the trust of working animals takes patience, and every interaction is a unique experience.

Sheru, a young Bhotiya dog, lives at a tea shop on a trekking route. His good looks and charming personality make him the perfect "sales doggo."

Another shot of Sheru, looking intently at the camera. His story is a wonderful example of the bond between people and their dogs in the Himalayas.

About this collection

Working with Himalayan sheepdogs requires a completely different pace than a standard studio session. These dogs are naturally wary, independent, and deeply protective of their flock. I do not use high-intensity strobes or force unnatural poses. Instead, I spend time simply existing in their space until they accept my presence, allowing me to capture their true guarding instincts and quiet moments without interrupting their daily routine.

When I am photographing dogs in the Himalayas, the environment dictates the process. Whether it is a Gaddi or a Bhotiya dog, these are working animals with a job to do. They are not pets waiting for a treat; they are companions to shepherds and guardians of their land.

My Approach to On-Location Shoots

Because I prioritize the animal's comfort, I avoid the disruption of heavy gear. I rely on natural light and minimal equipment to keep the interaction authentic. If a dog like Sheru is guarding a mountain shop, I wait for him to initiate contact. This might mean spending hours just sitting on a grassy slope, letting the animal get used to the sound of my shutter.

Why the Himalayas?

Uttarakhand provides a raw, unfiltered backdrop that you cannot replicate in a studio. The lighting changes by the minute, and the terrain helps reveal the dog's character—how they move on steep inclines, how they sit at the edge of a meadow, and how they interact with their owners. These sessions are perfect for owners who want to capture their pet’s adventurous spirit or for documentation purposes. If you are planning an outdoor shoot in the mountains, reach out early. I travel across India for these assignments, and syncing with the local weather and herd movements takes a bit of planning.
