In-Person Kathak Intensives with Pooja Pant
Deepen your practice with hands-on Kathak intensives. Join me for detailed technique correction and expressive Abhinay sessions in a studio setting.
During a workshop on the 'approach to choreography', we sat down to discuss the process before putting it into practice. This hybrid session had students attending both in-person and online.
Leading an `Abhinay` workshop in Ahmedabad. We explored a piece about Krishna, focusing on how to use expression to tell a story, followed by some energetic `Nritta` practice.
It was an honor to have senior Kathak exponent Durga Arya didi conduct a workshop for my students. We all learned the intricacies of Jhaptaal, followed by a lovely impromptu `baithak` session.
A short performance clip announcing an upcoming workshop in Mumbai. These intensives are open to dancers of all levels and styles who wish to work on their `chakkars` and `abhinay`.
Announcing a workshop in Bangalore with a glimpse of a `Thumri` performance. In my `Abhinay` sessions, we break down such traditional pieces to understand the art of expression in Kathak.
This is the announcement for a `Nritta` and `Abhinay` workshop I conducted for Nritya Dhara in Mumbai. These intensive sessions are designed to build technique and expressive skills.
About In-Person Intensives
When we work on Nritta in a studio, the physical space makes all the difference. In these intensives, I provide tactile corrections to fix posture and alignment issues, such as stiff knees or hunching, that are often difficult to correct on a screen. You get to feel the correct weight distribution for chakkars and understand the exact energy needed for footwork in real-time.
My in-person workshops are designed as a dialogue. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced dancer, these sessions are a space where we dismantle the complexities of Kathak together. We move beyond theory, focusing on the rigour of practice. We spend dedicated time on Nritta, breaking down chakkar mechanics and tatkar speed until it feels natural. I do not just demonstrate; I observe your movement to offer immediate feedback on your posture, breath, and gaze.
The Abhinay portion of the intensive is equally practical. We deconstruct traditional Thumris and explore Nayika Bhed to help you build your own expressive vocabulary. You are not just learning a routine; you are learning how to emote and tell a story through dance. These sessions are limited to small batches to ensure everyone gets personal attention. At the end of the intensive, you receive a certificate of participation, and more importantly, a clear roadmap for your personal riyaaz. Whether you are looking to refine your technique or deepen your storytelling, these intensives provide the environment to bridge the gap between effort and artistry.
